One in a Billion,
This review is from: Wing Commander (1999 Film) (Audio CD)
Ever find that CD that defines your collection? Wing Commander does it. David Arnold writes a wonderful opening theme (and 3 other cues) and then turns Kevin Kiner onto the project. What happens is near-brillance. Nicholas Dodd does an arangement to blow the roof off of every house on your block and even John Williams, I'm sure, is envious of the complexity of the music (I hear as many as three alternating rhythms in certain pieces, yet it all flows together). Anyone who likes this should look into Shadows of the Empire and Stargate. ID4 is another, and Medal of Honor. But, above all, this is easily one of my favs.

One word: Incredible,

I must say, the movie wasn't all that good aside from the effects, but the music was great. Usually, sci-fi movies have sort of techno soundtracks that don't have any real "feel" to them. Wing Commander, however is something that is easily listened to, and also is probably the only sci-fi CD that you can play while company is over without scaring them away of annoying them.

Could have been better.,

I bought this CD on the theme that accompanied the movie. The first track is a classic as far as music with a hook. It is that good. Now the rest was a disappointment. While I enjoyed most tracks they seemed like a rehash of Stargate and Independence Day. The biggest turn-off was the electronic music in tracks 10 and 11. What were they thinking? And just who is Kevin Kiner? Most of the music sounded like that of David Arnold without the newness or individuality. Kevin has good basic orchestral skills but needs work in matching the music with the emotions of the movie. And please, Kevin, lay off of the electric guitar. All in all I give it 3 stars.

I've enjoyed the Wing Commander games and the recent movie, and never before I seen a music this grand. David Arnold's WC theme is probably the best for inviting us to the WC universe. The Overture was incredible, great drums and horns, but lacked the opening quiet theme used in Kennedy's speech (and the website's intro). The 'Hot Dogs' track had some good electric guitar, but I also heard some weird sounds which I almost dismissed for a malfunction in my Discman. Overall it's good (for the thirty-some minutes of music) but was unfortunately without the 5 minute long medley, which appeared in the movie's credit roll.

Thoughts From A Wing Commander Fan!,

Hi! I reckon this soundtrack rocks! I have been a fan of Wing Commander since I can remember, so it is great to hear music appropriate for that universe. I have seen the film and currently own it on video, it is great, but the music is way better! However, the CD is too short and is missing some vital cues, such as the torpedo battle with the Kilrathi half-way through the film. I noticed this music while watching the movie and was a little annoyed when I discovered it was not included on the CD, however it still rocks so YAY!

Loved the games, in fact one of the reasons i loved them was because of the music scores. The movie is not worth giving a comment, but the soundtrack is pretty good, but honestly i think the soundtrack in the games are better, especially WC III, it's simply amazing...

The best space music since Star Wars!!!,

Wing Commander was one of the best films ever and the score was no different! It was on so many levels of emotion and gradaur that you listen in utter awe of who did it. It is not often that two people make a great score but David Arnold and Kevin Kiner made one of the greatest ever. I am a abid score listener and I was like this score deserves every kind of recoognition it can get. It went from power and might to sweet and sad at the same time. it went from greatness to mystery is the blink of an eye. the onlt greater space music is from te Star Wars movies. the wing commander score is just a score of utter awe and inspiration.

Better than the movie?,

I've been a soundtrack fan for a long time...especially the big, sweeping, epic adventure movie scores. I logged on to a site that plays a "radio show" of movie scores, downloaded, and listened. The overture from this CD was the first selection. I thought it was really cool..right up my alley. I was holding my then five-week old son as I sat in front of the computer. He was starting to fuss and cry, but when the overture started, he calmed down right away and listened!! He seemed to like it as much as I did (which is why I now call the overuture "Peter's Theme"). I ordered the CD shortly thereafter, and was not disappointed. I especially enjoyed the track called "Hot Dogs" which incorporates some nifty electric guitar work. I heard the movie is not very good, so I suppose this is a case where the music is better than the movie.
