This game is marvelous, has a great cast and a good plot. Unlike many games this game has a storyline that changes upon the influences of your decisions in-game. I played it for hours and hours straight when I was younger, and re-ordered it since I lost it. Maybe it's for the memories that I have towards this saga of games, but I seriously can't rate lower than 5 stars.

Some of you kids may not be old enough to remember this but there used to be this little company named Origin who made the best space combat games ever produced. Seriously kids you need to understand how big a 500 MB game was in 1995.

This game has three things that are lacking in most modern PC games

1. A plot that makes some kind of sense
2. Challenging missions. While I like modern day incarnations like X-2, Freelancer and Tacheyon there is just no challenge anymore. You play these missions 10 or 11 times and still not beat them.
3. Good actors there are none of the secound tier day time soap rejects that you find in most games. Even today if you can get this game to work you will recognize these people.

Overall-just a wonderful game which I have happy to play agian.

The Price of Freedom. You are taken far from Kilrathi space and now it's the "Border Worlds" you must contend with and a bit of the burocracy of people too comfortable with thier now fast forgotten Kilarthi wars. The irony and relatablity of this plot is something you just don't find in movies, shows, nor games today though a few "glitches" in the software come up(manly Microhard's fault for forsaking DOS compatiblity with soundcard software). DOS box is a tool for circumventing this issue, the makers contiually update and refine thier wonderful utility on a regular basis. And there are instructions for how to run this particular game under it on the website via the Sorceforge users' helpful input. Mark Hamil reprises his role as a near retiring Wing Leader brought out of it by Todd Marshal's "Maniac". The missions a fifty or so line some chosen paths cancel other's for a more enjoyable experience via the player. A few are in mission choices one critical to the very character of your "character" Col. Christopher "Mavrick" Blaire. You live up to your call sign or go with Tolwin's people(Malcolm McDowel). Most missions are of three variety, offense, defend a carrier, and a few planetfalls which will run easily on modern PC's but I always had a slow time of it with my now memoriable and skeletal 486 on VESA local as my "bus" was the standard ISA.

Works with DOS BOX enabled. I'd suggest installing the win95 patch to do away with having to load up DOSBOX each time. Otherwise, this game plays perfectly on vista64 bit. So, buyers, do not be afraid!

As for the gameplay? Very difficult compared to past and future entries in the series. Why? It's because missles are so powerful that the mere brush of one is instant death. I'd recommend brushing up on dog fighting skills ASAP.

As for the plot, well, probably the height of the series is reached with a cast that includes none other than: John Rhys Davies of Indiana Jones fame, Malcolm Mcdowell (Clock Work Orange), and of course Mark Hamill of Stars Wars. As always, you can have the best actors but a terrible plot, but this game delivers and the pay off is nice.

If you can get past the initial overwhelming difficulty, you'll find a fantastic plot of intrigue and betrayal awaiting you among the stars.

on this particular game, the game was given to me in windows 95. HE DID offer very easy instructions on how to manuver around this problem(i run xp), but when i asked for help once those didnt work, i have not received word back yet. other than that, the game came very quickly, and safely packaged.
