Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-Another book from the prolific sports writer. This time the plot centers around a house fire that occurs while parents are out for the evening. Neighbor Mr. Bellamy rescues the two Crawford children, but suffers smoke inhalation. Later, the fire victims claim that Mr. Bellamy, an electrician, installed faulty wiring in their home. This causes trouble between soccer teammates Dana Bellamy and Benton Crawford. If the wiring is not at fault, how did the fire start? Dana finds out something that could get Benton in trouble and has to confront him with the facts. Christopher reveals the clues slowly so that only astute readers will be able to solve the mystery before the ending. He is best at describing sports play-by-play, and his readers will not be disappointed with the added suspense.

From Kirkus Reviews

In his latest sports story, Christopher skates the edge of self-parody. Dana is being ostracized by members of the Hammerville Anchors; consequently, the team is losing game after game. His father's in the hospital, badly injured while rescuing Dana's best friend Benton from a burning house, but Benton--rather than showing gratitude--is spreading a rumor that Dana's father is responsible for the fire. The author provides more than enough clues that Benton is hiding something: shifty behavior, a persistent cough, a mysterious box that he disposes of after the fire while a neighbor secretly films him. Yes, he's taken up cigarettes (``I got hooked,'' he confesses when Dana confronts him) and it has not only affected him on the playing field but has resulted in his burning the house. His horrified parents rush him off to therapy; the Anchors once again become a winning team. Christopher's handling of underlying issues is uncharacteristically exaggerated; still, his soccer action is dependably fast and furious. (Fiction. 8-11) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. A Kid's Review
This review is from: Top Wing (Matt Christopher Sports Classics) (Paperback)
I'm a 9 year old boy who loves sports. I had to read a mystery book for school. This book was perfect because it was interesting, fun to read and exciting. It starts out with two 12 year old boys named Benton Crawford and Dana Bellamy. They are neighbors, friends and on the same soccer team. A fire breaks out at Benton's house. Dana's dad saves Benton and his sister. Benton starts a rumor that Dana's dad who was their electrician had done a bad job wiring the house and that was what Benton thought caused the fire. After the fire Benton never passed the ball to Dana anymore. Things get really heated up between Benton and Dana.
How did the fire really start? Was Dana's dad really responsible? You'll be surprised to find out the answers to the mystery when you read this book.
I would recommend this book to everyone. It was fun to read!

2.0 out of 5 stars Top Wing, March 31, 2009
This review is from: Top Wing (Matt Christopher Sports Classics) (Paperback)
My son who is 9, struggles with reading, so some of the vocabulary was a real stretch for him. We use a "fist" method, where he counts the words on a page that are too tough, and if he gets the whole fist, the book usually is just that. We were close on many of the pages and though the story was good, as were the messages, this is not a good book for a child who has a "decoding" issue. It took almost 10 days for us to get through it. Even his teacher admitted she knew it would be a challenge.

TOP WIND

My book is about a kid. His Name is Dana and he plays on the soccer team. One day he came home from soccer practice and his home was on fire. The parents came home too. The fire fighters said, "Kids did it."
The kid's soccer team found the house burning. The kids on the soccer team were doing a bad job and lost all their games. The soccer team helped to get a new home. The next year the team won every game and won a championship cup.
I like the book top wind and it is a good book. The book is for every one to read. I would give it a ten.
