Wing Wireless Controller for Wii

It comes in one of those horrid "you need a scissor to open, and cut yourself from the plastic" plastic packaging that inevitably scraped my hand, but luckily didn't draw any blood.

The package contains the controller (obviously), a small wireless adapter that attaches to the bottom of the Wii-remote (where the nunchuck's cord would attach), a pair of non-rechargeable AAA batteries, and two big-sheet manuals rolled into little bundles (each has a different set of languages).

Pros:
+ Controller feels solid (no squeeks or give).
+ Small remote adapter frees you from the cord you'd otherwise tether between the official classic controller and the remote.
+ Buttons layout (including "trigger" buttons by index fingers) is the same as the official classic controller.
+ Buttons layout played fine with Megaman 9 (virtual console game), with each color pair (right red button and blue buttons) both replicating remote's buttons 1 & 2, so you can use whichever pair you like.
+ Can recharge if using AAA NiMH batteries (not included) via mini-USB cable (not included).
+ More comfortable to hold than the standard remote.

Cons:
- Only two controllers can be used at once (wireless adapter and controller only have two pair settings: slow blink and fast blink). Meaning, only up to 2 people can use Wii Wing Wireless Controller, while players 3 & 4 need to use an official classic or standard remote.
- Didn't work with Tetris Party (virtual console game).
- Buttons feel a bit mushy, but it's a personal preference.
- Lag! It MAY be psychological, but when playing Megaman 9, there seemed to be a slight lag (0.5s) in pressing a button (eg. jump) and the game actually registering it.

Conclusion:
If quick reflexes isn't a defining factor (as in platform-jumping games) this is a great controller for classic games, which are typically purchased and downloaded via virtual console. However, if you play split-second reflex games like Megaman 9 or often play Tetris Party, either stick with the standard remote (using the standard rubber sleeve) or get the official classic controller.

Works perfectly for what you need. Set-up is easy and I haven't noticed any lag in controller response worth mentioning. I've downloaded a number of SNES virtual console titles and haven't had an issue yet. Using the analog controls for classic games is a nice option as well.

The controller fits nicely in the palms of my hand, its not too light or bulky. After reviewing all other available wireless options for the Wii I found this one to be the best option and wasn't disappointed. If you're interested in using your Wii for classic games I'd say this is a must.

I've used this controller for two weeks now with no issues, I'll update my review later down the road to document any issues that arise with repeated long term use.

Update 9/15/10: Controller has never given me any issues to date and still works perfectly. Have been using it quite a bit for Arc Rise Fantasia. Love this controller.

This controller is so easy to use. The controller works well with the N64 games. It comes with an adapter that you plug into the bottom of your wii remote and sync it to the wing wireless controller. Its that simple. I have enjoyed using it. They are well worth the price.

I decided to order a pair of these controllers along with my copy of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and so far I've been very pleased with them. The Wing looks pretty awkward judging by the handful of photos of it available online, but I think it looks quite nice and very well-made in person. In most aspects the Wing compares favorably to the first-party Classic Controller, with a few notable differences. I find the Wing to be more comfortable to play with over long periods of time because of its ergonomic design (and not being awkwardly tethered to the Wii Remote). The controller's performance is also quite good; fighting games like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Brawl require fast response times and the Wing definitely delivers. I was initially worried about connecting through a wireless dongle, but extensive sessions in the aforementioned games revealed no signal disruption or input lag worth speaking of (even on an LCD). Overall, I would say the Wing is a great alternative to the Classic Controller and an easy recommendation considering it currently goes for about 50-75% the cost of the first-party controller at most retail stores. Nyko even offers a wired version of the controller at a lower price, for those that are worried about wireless response time or battery life.

Other notes:
* D-Pad feels slightly mushier than on the Classic Controller, but is responsive nonetheless. Double-tap, quarter/half-circle, DP, charge and 360° motions posed no problem.
* Analog stick restrictors are circular, unlike the 8-way restrictors on the Classic Controller. Can be a pro or con depending on your preference.
* Left analog stick can be used to navigate Wii Menus.
* ZR and ZL buttons are slightly easier to reach compared to the Classic Controller.
* Sync button doubles as the power switch. Just hold it down for a second or two to turn off the controller.
* Rechargeable AAA batteries (not included) are supported and can be charged within the controller via mini-USB cable (again, not included).
* Mini-USB port can also be used to directly power the controller if there are no batteries available.
* The sync light is kind of bright, which can be distracting if you like to play in the dark or have a reflective screen surface.
* Apparently doesn't work with HBC, so be warned if you're into that sort of thing.

While the Nyko Wing feels light it your hand it doesn't feel cheap. It is well put together, and so much better than anything else for virtual console games(that require something other than the wiimote). I had a little trouble snycing it at first but since then, no issue. My only complaint is having to use batteries. Honestly I can't tell you how good the battery life is since the ones in there haven't died yet. But its satisfactory.

If you are currently using the official Nintendo Wii classic controller, the Nyko Wii Wing Wireless Controller will make your gaming experience reach a new level and you'll be cursing yourself for not buying Nyko instead of the official controller. This controller is extremely responsive, very comfortable and easy to set up. Once you link it, that's it. I tried it with virtual console games such as, Final Fight, and Super Mario World. The difference was noticeable when compared to the Nintendo classic controller, which gives me hand pains and it's not very ergonomic. If you have an Xbox 360 and/or PS3, this will feel pretty familiar. The Joysticks are closer than the other consoles, but I don't really mind. One more thing, if you have NiHM rechargeable batteries, the Wii Wing will re-charge them for you with a USB cable (not included), the USB feature also lets you use the controller without batteries. The Wii Wing comes with regular AAA batteries included, and these last about 30 hrs.

I only had one problem with this controller. When you power your Wii down, the remote does not. You have to manually turn it off by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. I don't really mind.

Pros: cordless freedom, easy to link and use, more comfortable and responsive than the official Nintendo classic controller,recharges
AAA NiHM rechargeable batteries with a USB cord*** (not included). ***mini USB to regular.

Cons: Have to manually turn it off or battery will simply run out. Not a problem and not a good enough reason to give this controller a lower score.

The NYKO controller works better then the Nintendo Classic controller because it is easier for a person with adult size hands to hold. Added bonus no wires.

Only played brawl and naruto ex, its an ok controller, feels great when you hold it but not a big fan of the L R buttons, feels a bit cheap as well as sounds. Home button, start and select are way too mushy (good thing most of the time dont really use too often_, but makes up in the controller buttons, directional is ok but a bit mushy too, functions great though very responsive especially without having to worry about attaching the remote to it, wireless connection is great and responsive.

Personally I have just the classic controller, Hori classic (great but not worth the price in my opinon), some wavebirds and the good old classic gamecube controller and this product (Nyko wing) would be on the bottom of my list, gamecube controller on top despite lack of wireless.

I bought this to have a controller to use for all my NES, SNES, N64 and Playstation games that I installed on my softmodded Wii console. This controller works fine with all licensed game discs, and with my USB loader, but not with any of my retro-gaming loaders.

As of the time of this review, without doing some heavy research online and then some invasive programming, I'm stuck with using only official Wii licensed controllers.

This controller is very comfortable and seems well built. No problems. I use it for side scrollers mostly.
