5.0 out of 5 stars Wings Review
The first time I read this book was in fourth grade---which, needless to say, was a bit ago. But I fell in love with it! I love it; it's a wonderful story that teaches children about inner strength and determination. I would recommend it to any person---child, adult, or teenager. And you have NO idea how happy I was when I was finally able to find this book on amazon.com...

5.0 out of 5 stars The problem with wings, December 11, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Wings (Paperback)
My opinion of this book I say that it is really suprising and exciting. What I liked about this book was the part that Ian had actually sprouted WINGS!!! I liked this part because sometimes I wish I could fly. What I disliked about the book was Ian's parents. I mean why were they so rotten to him? It isn't his fault he sprouted wings! I would compare this book to "A Child Called It" because they treated this kid the same way! Well I hope you read this book Wings soon.

I read this after my daughter had finished it and found it very enjoyable. I'd highly recommend it to elementary school kids. It's not as good as "Holes" but it's close.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intensely thought-provoking book!, December 21, 1998

My Fourth Grade class was held spellbound as I read this book aloud to them. It created fabulous discussions about being different. This book is very intense in its depiction of a family torn apart by a lack of communication. Anita and her mother step in and provide the non-threatening support a young man needs to make a very difficult decsion that will affect his family. My students were asked to share the way they thought each of them would solve the problem before I read the young man's choice. Both their choices and his created wonderful discussions in class and in the students' journals.

Poor Ian Carras. His father, an ambitious politician, overlooks him completely. His mother doesn't understand him either, and rationalizes his father's behavior with lame excuses. When Ian begins growing a giant pair of wings, he becomes even more alienated from his family.

At first, Ian sees the wings as an embarrassing encumbrance, but under the guidance of two caring friends, Maggie and Miz Hawkins, he starts to see how this source of angst can also cause great joy and liberation. In short, Ian learns to fly in both the literal and figurative sense.

A few factors prevented me from enjoying this book as much as I wanted to. First, Brittain's prose is wooden and flat; not even the flying scenes come alive. Also, character development is lacking; even the "good" characters never advance beyond cartoon-like composites of two or three traits. The "bad" characters, such as Ian's father, are so despicable that I had to wonder why Ian even cares what they think.

Which brings me to my biggest disappointment: Ian's choice concerning the wings. Ian is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for the sake of people who hardly seem to care about him. Why?

5.0 out of 5 stars A retrospect, July 7, 2005
This review is from: Wings (Paperback)
I read this book in 3rd or 4th grade, and was thrilled with it. It has stuck with me through my years (Now fresh out of high school), and lurked in my mind. I was so happy to find it 8 years later, it just made my day. All I remembered was the title, and a bit of the content, so it was hard to find. I highly reccomend this book, and to ignore the 'School Library Journal.' They most obviously have something stuck in their rectum that is in desperate need of removal.

This review is from: Wings (Paperback)
Wings is a very fun novel to read. Its about a boy named Ian who grew wings somehow. His family started to dislike him because of his wings, especially his dad. His dad is trying to run the place of the mayor. He was so strict about it and thought Ian was in his way. So he hid Ian from the world. But some repoters knew about this and went crazy about this new subject.
Soon Ian got tired of being hidden. He forced his dad to let him go to school. Ian had no welcome from his friends at school. But a girl named Anita who has six fingers helped Ian to live a life at her house while the reporters went crazy at his house.
Soon after while living with Anita, Ian learned to fly with his wings. He felt like his worring was over. But soon his family found a doctor that can remove his wings. Ian didn't want to cut off his wings, and even though he did, his dad would start talking and talking about him being mayor. But his mom had promised him that they would start tobe a family again.
Ian thought and was ready to cut the wings off his back. For the love of his family.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of a few, November 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Wings (Paperback)
There are, very few books that are written about people flying. Flight beyond airplanes always intersted me, so ofcourse I like the book. It is written from a different point of view, how would it be like to fly? How could someone know what that was like? Ask a bird? So, apart from being a little off as far as the rules of flight, it was, a injoyable book. I read it twice in one day just for the thrill of wishing I was there... It also has quite a surprise ending!
