The most exciting thing for fans of Brokeback Mountain is that not only is the movie one of the greatest films in perhaps.. forever, the related goodies are just as good (soundtrack, book, story-to-screenplay, etc). Whether you bought the actual soundtrack or not, you are surely aware of this film's fantastic score by Gustavo Santaolalla, in particular "Wings." The song has emotion far beyond any piece of music I have ever heard. Surprisingly, once given Dance Remixes, the score still shines through and still makes you cry.

The track is remixed by three of the decades best DJs Tony Moran, Manny Lehman, and Gabriel Dresden. Their remixes are hot enough to make you dance, but never seem to lose anything that makes Wings so special. Tony Moran's mix seems to be the most popular of the three, and for good reason. "Wings" is given swishy ambient waves behind a killer dance beat. In perhaps my favorite mix by Manny Lehman amazing club sounds bang between choruses, and the Gabriel Dresden remix focuses most on the beauty of the original song as it builds up to a dramatic pause where "Wings" plays without a drum beat for a few moments, and is then taken back to the sweeping bass and guitar.

It's remixes like these that prove a good song will be good anywhere it goes, to the clubs, on a movie screen, or in your CD player.

Whether you are just a huge fan of the movie and want to collect everything Brokeback, like dance music, or just want something different in your music collection, it's impossible to deny that this collection of remixes will blow you away.

In theory, it's a semi-interesting conceit - in reality, it's one long, flat, tribal drone that goes on ad nauseum long after what little interest there was has already peaked. Do yourself a favor and support the film by buying the DVD and the original score/soundtrack, but take a pass on this - this MIGHT have worked with a cooler DOWNTEMPO remix - maybe HERBERT or JOAKIM or PORTISHEAD...anyone...but these hacks!

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much of a good thing..., April 25, 2006

Great to have the full length remixes, but I think they missed the mark:

Track 1: Organized Nature Remix - 10:04
Track 2: Collaboration Remix - 9:17
Track 3: Manny Lehman Remix - 11:12

I like my long club versions just as much as the next guy, and I'm thankful they released each remix on this disc. Well, at least the Collaboration and Nature remixes anyway!

But can SOMEONE say "edit"? Where are the mid length 5-6 minute versions for those of us who don't mix our music live? Each version on this disc is available as an edited version from a popular music download service. So WHY aren't they on this disc? (I felt ripped off after learning this).

It's really a shame, I think the sales for this disc, and many other remix CD singles would increase if the labels would think to include both the long club versions and somewhat shorter versions to suit people with either preference. It would have been smart to include the original version from the soundtrack, some people might consider purchasing the soundtrack upon hearing it.

4.0 out of 5 stars G & D mix is awesome, the other two mixes beyond terrible!, September 2, 2006

Reading some of the reviews of this CD-single are quite hillarious! It's pretty clear most who reviewed this do not understand what remixes are about, and what these mixes were supposed to do. These are for clubs, and for people who like to listen to Club music. It was also very funny to read some of the descriptions of the first mix on the CD. Next time you guys buy a CD-single that are remixes, you might remember the key word on the CD...REMIXES!

Now on to the mixes.. Gabriel & Dresden's 'Organized Nature Remix' is unbelieveable! Completely doing the theme justice. It is a truly beautiful mix of the song, and the breaks in and out of the theme are perfect. Gabriel & Dresden are the top Trance remixers in the U.S. When I first found out they were from the United States, I was shocked! They definitely sound much more Euro, and their darker style is just amazing with all the mixes they do.

Now on to the other two... these mixes are completly aweful! The theme sounds all chopped up, and these horrible House versions of the song just do not match up. I have heard that the 'Collaboration Mix' is the most popular of the three, and I do not know how. The guitar is sped up in the mix, and in another is sampled over and over which again just does not make any sense and sounds dreadful. Tony Moran, Manny Lehman and Warren Rigg are much better than that, and their remixes are very disappointing. You guys, especially Moran, can do better than this garbage.

I give this 4 stars because the Gabriel & Dresden version is just amazing, and is definitely worth the price of the CD-single!

1.0 out of 5 stars An ABOMINATION! An ATROCITY!, June 8, 2006
This review is from: Wings - Brokeback Mountain Theme Remixes (Audio CD)
I love the picture on the cover (which looks better in colour, though) -- but who in HELL thought this was a good idea??

"I know! Let's take the heartbreaking end theme from the movie, where everyone in the theatre is sobbing, and mopping away their tears, and let's kack it up by adding bouncy little rhythm tracks to it, so all the club airheads and disco bunnies who are ripped on E can get up and boogie to it!"

No, no, NO! A thousand times NO!! How anyone who has seen this movie could possibly feel like DANCING when they hear that tune is beyond belief. This was a horrible, GROTESQUE idea. It doesn't even deserve one star. Anyone involved with this production should have their career in music terminated immediately.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good - but not great, June 10, 2006

As a Dance fan I really liked this idea (sorry to those that did not think this would work). I, too, LOVE the original and the heartfelt tune it gives the moivie. What this does is give a heartfelt feeling to dance songs that just seem to go on forever with very little melodies. The PROBLEM with this one is that the 3 selections available are just ok. The fist mix has the original theme in it then breaks into a drum riff that sounds corny...bad way to mix it. The second one is by far the most enjoyable. It even adds a bit more to the song that really works for me the more I hear it. VERY GOOD. The 3rd mix is a mess. Having to make the main one part of the song loop over and over again is dull.

Too bad DJ Quicksilver can't get ahold of the rights to do his version of this...it would be a masterpiece dance song if he was to do it.

In the end - It seems a lot of money to enjoy ONE version of the song. Will be interesting to see if any others will try to make different mixes to it.

Oct. 17/07 hey guys I've just edited the colloboration on this song on my own and I enjoy it more now than ever...u my want to check out the other dance version on this song as done by Lifedance.....

I live on club remixes. I used to love those extended ones but I grew tired of hearing next to nothig at the beginning and ending to these songs which left the good stuff in between. But I still love them but I prefer the radio edits. I wish they had done the same here which they usually include on cd singles. Would love the Tony Moran Rigg version first then the collaberation. Please edit these songs guys.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why do they have to destroy everything beautiful?, May 17, 2006
By
This review is from: Wings - Brokeback Mountain Theme Remixes (Audio CD)
How do I accurately describe this album? It's like the music industry jumped up on my stereo, bent down, and squeezed a warm stinking turd for us all to smell.

The soft beauty and grace that Brokeback's original score worked so hard to achieve is absolutely pummeled to death by this filth. I don't even think clubbers will enjoy this, I mean exactly how does one "remix" country music? The melody is twisted and bent into the timing of the beats and sounds completely wrong. Save your money for the original, or if you have to buy club music, get something (ANYTHING) else.

As circuit music goes, I suppose you could get away with spinning this once everyone's ecstacy has kicked in. But watch the volume on the first remix as it feels like a plunger is being used to suck out your brains (like on those funniest videos programs where the amateurs overuse the zoom function in and out and in and out.... Yup, the volume goes up and down for a couple minutes). Some parts of the song are cool and dancy.

The second and third remixes are OK to chill to. The second remix is the most melodic and has some extra guitar stuff added. As far as the third remix goes, the silly cartoon-sounding music will keep you from having an ounce of anxiety over any sad memories from the movie that the original mix might have evoked. The added music is as if from a preschool children's television program. It's like Daffy Duck tried to sing the national anthem on acid-- but there are no words.

As far as the danceability of the remixes go, it's fine and the sprinkles of pretty music nice within the overall club drone. If anything, these mixes open possibilities for some really interesting mixes to be done. But next time, let's try for something with a little more soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spread Your Wings And Fly?!, April 16, 2006
This review is from: Wings - Brokeback Mountain Theme Remixes (Audio CD)
Caughtivating Soundtrack and now a club anthem properly done for Wings, the emotional main theme of Brokeback Mountain. Origianl conceived as a beautiful and remarkable piece of art and then awarded with Oscar Award to composer Gustavo Santoalalla, the song became a secret underground song that was really easy to get messed with some dance elements. That's a pretty good idea and remixed the song with a quality level and released a commercial single it's ten times better.

Tony Mora is the most club available song and really loving plus Gabriel's version makes one of a kind song. The single caught the attention to Clubs who had played the song on all of their formats and give a very good ode to this lovely and very dramatic song. How can we forget Wings ocassionally will become a really anthem to love? Nobody expected it but with such a good movie what else can you!
