Book Description

October 1999
The bestselling author of Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile returns with another sweeping tale centered on the courage and irrepressible spirit of its protagonist heroine.

Wings of Destiny is the story of Jefferson Duke, a man completely motivated by his indomitable belief in his ancestor's dream that his destiny is to build the golden city of San Francisco. However, in order to fulfill his ancestral destiny, Jefferson must sacrifice the most precious of life's gifts: his heart.

From the moment he sets foot on the shore of the trading post Yuerba Buena, Jefferson creates and perpetuates the lie that leads to his own inevitable destruction. Here the personal and the historical coincide, as the author deftly interweaves Jefferson's downfall with the infamous San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Jefferson's destruction reveals the evil, greed, lust and family revenge between the House of Duke and the House of Chen. Theirs is the timeless struggle between good and evil, and it is a struggle that must be exposed.

Only Jefferson's granddaughter Barbara, a journalist for The Call, can root out the facts about the city's graft and corruption, as well as the white slavery that still exists on the Barbary Coast. However, in order to expose these evils and eliminate them, Barbara must betray Jefferson and, ultimately, learn the truth about herself and her own secret past.

Amazon.com Review

If you lean toward the metaphysical and love an adventurous romance novel every once in awhile, Lanigan's latest may tickle your fancy. The bestselling author of Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile stretches her wings into the Book Industry Study Group's newly designated genre of "visionary fiction" with Wings of Destiny. Five generations follow a predestined path starting when the sole member of the fifth generation visits a member of the first in a shimmering vision to let her know what to do so that the fifth can be born to achieve an important goal! Each generation communicates with the following one from the great beyond, leading them to fulfill appointed destinies. From the 18th century to the 20th, in Jamaica, North Carolina, San Francisco, and Peking, the plot twists and turns in a sinister and steamy saga of self-discovery laced with New Age aphorisms. --P. Randall Cohan

From Publishers Weekly

"Emotions rushed through the room, battering the walls like a tropical hurricane. Metaphysical questions bombarded each other as Yuala read his thoughts, and Rachel read those of her mother." Readers unfamiliar with Lanigan's (Romancing the Stone) flamboyant prose may mistake this overly melodramaticAat times truly mawkishAmultigenerational historical romance for a bald-faced lampoon of the genre. But such is not the case, and Lanigan's young protagonist is nothing if not earnest in her quest for social justice and psychic well-being. As the story begins on April 15, 1906, three days before the catastrophic earthquake in San Francisco, heroine Barbara Kendrick is a fearless young journalist on the brink of exposing the corruption of city officials. Then her mentor, 91-year-old city founder Jefferson Duke, presents her with his diaries and his mother Rachel's writings, and the meandering epic slips back to 1774. RachelAthe fair-skinned daughter of Yuala, a Jamaican-born African voodoo priestess, and Henry Duke, a wealthy white manAis herself destined to love a white Charleston planter; their son, Jefferson, makes his fortune in a white man's world. Meanwhile, a Chinese clan led by malevolent Nan-Yung pursues the other descendants of Henry Duke, whose brother Andrew mired Nan-Yung's grandfather in the opium trade. The two families converge on San Francisco, and as the earthquake rocks the city, centuries-old accounts are settled, and Barbara discovers her true place in the Duke family history. Apparitions, telepathy, clairvoyance and portentous dreams notwithstanding, Lanigan's research is sound, and the climactic descriptions of the historic earthquake ring true. The fulsome prose becomes less distracting as the narrative unfolds, but this is nonetheless an unashamed foray into romantic terrain. 50,000 first printing; major ad/ promo; 5-city author tour. (Oct.) publisher of paperback titles on human relations, psychology and self-help, this volume is HCI's first hardcover publication.

I applaud, I am awed, I kneel, (to the spirit of this book). The only crime is its limited circulation, and I have to wonder why. Wings kept me riveted from beginning to end. It was a wonderful book by which to start the new Mill. To Catherine I can only say thank you, and despite the limited cir., that somehow it will reach many people to help them understand their destiny, and the correct information of the helping spirits who are with us daily to guide and love us still.

I am in awe of Catherine Lanigan's talent as a writer. She really has a gift to keep one clued to the pages. This novel, like all the others will keep you awake all night as you tell yourself, just one more page. It's just amazing to me that she keeps pumping out great novels, one right after the other! I'm sure that man upstairs is guiding her pen, especially with this one. You won't be sorry if you indulge in this book, it's a real (spiritual) treat.
