Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-The dragonets set out to find the hidden underwater SeaWing kingdom and Queen Coral, Tsunami's mother, in this exciting sequel to The Dragonet Prophecy (Scholastic, 2012). When they arrive, Coral is thrilled to see the daughter who was stolen from her as an egg, but things don't go exactly as planned. Tsunami had always assumed she was the sole heir to the SeaWing throne, but a surprise younger sister leaves her confused about her future role, and Queen Coral's distrust of the other dragonets causes them to be imprisoned yet again. Having read the first book in the series will help youngsters understand the motivations behind the characters' choices, but isn't strictly necessary to enjoy the nonstop action. Tensions mount as someone continues to kill Coral's unhatched female dragonets, and Tsunami herself is attacked. The dragonets become more and more endearing as the series progresses, and the adults more sinister. Moments of danger and brutality are tempered with comic relief, making this a perfect adventure for young fantasy fans to sink their teeth into.-Mandy Laferriere, Fowler Middle School, Frisco, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

The Dragonets of Destiny, having escaped their prison in the kingdom of the Skywings, seek out the ocean kingdom of the Seawings. Tsunami, the Seawing princess stolen as an unhatched egg by the Talons of Peace, is expecting a rapturous reunion with her mother, Queen Coral. Though Tsunami is welcomed by the queen, she realizes that finding the kingdom and returning home are two different things. Having set the scene in The Dragonet Prophecy (2012), Sutherland spends more time on character development here, with the bulk of the book focusing on Tsunami’s story. With only a few pieces falling into place, there are still intrigues to uncover and kingdoms to visit in upcoming volumes. Grades 4-7, --Kara Dean

Our daughters love these books, including this one. They say the writing flows very well, easy to read, great adventures and they breezed right through the series. They can't put these books down! Highly recommended. (Our daughters started reading these when they were eight; one is now nine and the other ten. They have read all of the series including the Warriors series, Wings of Fire series, Seekers series, and Survivors series). They did not like the Survivors series at all. Our daughters did not like the Survivors series because they felt that all the characters were too similar to each-other and the plot appeared to be unorganized and missed it's meaning completely, (vague, confusing plot). In addition, my daughters state that the characters in Survivors appeared to be whinny and undesirable (difficult to connect with).

Wonderful well-written tale about five mismatched dragon hatchlings trying to save their world. Who wouldn't want to read a book about that? This book, the second in the series,( If you haven't read the first I advise you to do so ) has the normal lessons that you would expect from any children's book. Lessons of friendship and the importance of family, yadda, yadda. It's also a little dark in places. So theres a bit of death and intrigue; not a bedtime story for your five-year old. Slightly older kids will love it. Heck I'm 34 and I thought it was great!
