5.0 out of 5 stars Passion and Flying, February 9, 2008

On The Wings Of Love
Elizabeth Lane
Harlequin Historical
January 2008

Dreams, all of us have them but how many of us are willing to risk everything to follow them. Elizabeth Lane has two very determined characters in On The Wings Of Love. Neither is willing to give up their dream even though it threatens to pull them apart as quickly as it brought them together.

Alexandra Bromley is searching for excitement, not the husband her father and mother keep demanding she find. The problem is none of the "acceptable men" they introduce her to have any appeal. Old money and proper background is not enough for her. Alexandra craves love. A staid life like her mother's will never be enough for her. She thrives on pushing the limits.

Pushing the limits is Rafe Garrick's very way of life. He works hard and will one day achieve his dream because of it. He is determined to build a better plane than the Wright brothers. Flying is his passion. During a test flight, Rafe runs into trouble and crashes on a beach. Luckily, help is close at hand. He is rescued and his plane is salvaged. The Bromley's, whose beach he crashed on, are kind enough to let him stay until his broken leg is sturdy enough for him to get around. Rafe is in a hurry to leave and start working on his plane. Besides, the Bromley's are rich and way out of his league. Out of his league and spoiled best describes Alexandra. He fights his attraction to the girl and fights her over-bearing father with his offers to buy the rights to his plane designs.

Rafe succeeds against the father, mostly, but Alexandra is more tenacious. She has found something that sparks interest in her heart, the idea of flying. She offers her help with rebuilding his damaged plane with the condition he takes her up in it once they are finished with the repairs. Eventually, Rafe gives in. They grow to respect each other and things go further between them than either originally wanted. Their passion for flying and one another becomes too hard to fight. Unfortunately, their moment of wildness has consequences, marriage. Rafe wonders if he will ever be able to give Alexandra the kind of life she has always known. While Alexandra wonders if her husband loves her or if she is trapped into the same loveless life her mother was cursed with. Forced marriages are rarely happy ones. With all the uncertainty Alexandra should play it safe but that is not her way. She has her own dreams and is willing to risk her husband's anger to pursue them.

Elizabeth Lane draws a perfect picture. You feel as if you are soaring through the sky making history right along with Rafe and Alexandra. She subtly makes their emotions and fears yours. Ms. Lane's secondary characters become important to you right along with the hero and heroine creating a complete world for you to experience. It is a skill I have long admired in her writing. So come fly with her and enjoy a thrilling ride.
