Book Description

July 1, 2001
Wings Over the Arctic is not only a story of arctic flights, but is actually a brief history of air conquest of the Arctic. The book tells about the tremendous work done in the Arctic by Soviet polar explorers and their contribution to the development of the country’s aviation and to cultural and economic construction in the northern regions of the Soviet Union.

About the Author

Mikhail Vodopyanov is a well-known Russian flyer whose life abounds in interesting events. In 1934 Vodopyanov took part in the Chelyuskin rescue operations in the Chukchi Sea and was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, which was then only instituted. From then on he devoted himself entirely to work in the Arctic, to the polar air service, participating in the great flights from Moscow to Cape Shmidt and to Rudolph Island.

During the war against the White Finns in 1939-1940 Mikhail Vodopyanov took part in the air operations at the fronts, sharing his rich polar flying experience in severe frost with the combat pilots. During the Great Patriotic War against the Nazi invaders he participated in many bombing missions. After the war he went back to the polar air service.
