When Mark Twain called Hawaii: "The lovliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean," it took him a long time to visit the fleet. Aviation changed that for malahinis (newcomers and tourists) and kamaainas (natives and long time residents). Peter Forman's Wings of Hawaii is both a detailed history of how this developed and an insight into the romance of both the industry and the islands.

From seaplane flights, through new views of the attack on the Day of Infamy, from an exploding airliner to price wars, Forman has us in the pilot's seat. Read this for Forman's knowledge of the business of this business. Read this for his love of the business, the islands, and the people who make Hawaii: "The only delightful place on earth," another of Twain's views.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Coffee Table Book for Hawaii Aficionados, July 16, 2006

This review is from: Wings of Paradise: Hawaii's Incomparable Airlines (Hardcover)
Having visited Hawaii a couple of times, I really appreciated this unique perspective of the islands. I had never previously seen the islands from the air (not unless you count the flights to and from)and found the book absolutely breath-taking. Although I am not a history of flight buff, I was still fascinated by the text, and it gave me yet one more reason to love that particular clutch of islands.

Reading the book has motivated me to spend part of my next visit to the islands touring them in the air. Thank you Mr. Forman for this wonderful addition to both history and literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible insight into the foundation of Hawaiian History, May 11, 2007
This review is from: Wings of Paradise: Hawaii's Incomparable Airlines (Hardcover)
I saw a preview for this book on the news, and how it was published very independently. Having a love for aviation, and being in the hospitality industry, I could not put this book down. It was an amazing recollection of the airline industry in Hawai'i which is a cornerstone in the foundation of the islands. Having recently departed Hawai'i to live on the main land, this book tells an incredible tale. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book!, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Wings of Paradise: Hawaii's Incomparable Airlines (Hardcover)
I loved this book!

I must admit a bias, in that that I grew up in Hawaii, and flew as a pilot for some of the airlines mentioned in this book. Forman tells an exciting, accurate story of Hawaii aviation. The book reads like a novel, with not a tedious sentence printed. I highly recommend this book for aviation/airline fans. You'll enjoy it!
