Great package, beautifully presented .Fantastic music and extra tracks but the DVD lacked the quality of material that the previous deluxe packages had.

I purchased the original vinyl in 1983 which I still own and play, and I always have loved this album.

WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, released in 1976, was Paul McCartney's seventh album after The Beatles, the fifth album for Wings, and the second with the lineup of Paul and Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch, and Joe English. For this album, Paul wanted Wings to be a full-fledged group, as The Beatles were, not just his backup band, so he gave all of the group members a chance to sing lead vocal, and in three cases, allowed them to write their own songs. The album was released twice on CD - in 1989 and 1993 - with the same bonus tracks: the Wings B-side "Sally G," and both sides of the instrumental single by the ad hoc group The Country Hams - "Walking In The Park With Eloise," written by Paul's dad Jim, and Paul's own "Bridge On The River Suite." All three of these tracks are now available on the new version of 1975's Venus and Mars.

The best-known songs on this album are the mega-hits "Silly Love Songs" and "Let 'Em In," but there are other gems, including Paul's rocker "Beware My Love," which I always considered a shot at the "Paul is dead" people; the funky "She's My Baby" and the gorgeous "Warm And Beautiful," both of which were redone for Paul's 1999 baroque work Working Classical; and the jazzy "San Ferry Anne." Denny Laine does two songs: Macca's "The Note You Never Wrote," which features an unkind reference to "The Mayor Of Baltimore" (probably the only time the late William Donald Schaefer was mentioned in a pop song, albeit indirectly), and Laine's own "Time To Hide," one of his best rockers.

I am aware that it's difficult for younger listeners to grasp the context of classic recordings that were made long before they were born, but SPEED OF SOUND represents the climax of some of the most carefree and happy times in rock and roll history. Looking back, it seems like everybody was young in the mid-70s, even if they weren't actually. There is nothing "silly" about the musical perfection heard in each cut on the original album release. The compositions and the performances on WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND indicate how much Paul demanded of himself, as well as his band-mates and the recording studio production staff. As for the two monster hit singles that are heard here, SILLY LOVE SONGS is the ultimate pop/rock tune- period and LET 'EM IN is a classic expression of the prevailing post-1960s pop culture sentiment of that pre-hair metal time. But, this album is more than a mere historical artifact of times gone by. The quality of Paul's bass playing and his vocal performances on this album set the all-time bar for musicians and performers from that point forward.

The WINGS OVER AMERICA concert tour that summer when SPEED OF SOUND was released was an incredible success, selling out large arenas like Atlanta's Omni twice over. I was able to squeeze in at the second Omni concert of that tour and I have never been in a concert crowd that was more ecstatic and mesmerized. I sure wish that I still had my t-shirt, program, and other souvenirs from that concert, but a hurricane washed them away. The success of that tour confirms the stunning impact of SPEED OF SOUND.

*Note that this is the last part of my review on the Venus and Mars and At The Speed of Sound reissues. If you haven't read the first part already, go to the page for Venus and Mars.

Wings at the Speed of Sound was quite a big seller when it was released in 1976. The reviews for the album, however, did not match with the sales: reviews were mixed, most feeling that the album was weak. For me, At the Speed of Sound is a strange album. There are some great songs on here but compared to Venus and Mars, it feels like the band went soft on this one. Still, At the Speed of Sound is not a bad album at all.

Speed of Sound features two of the band's biggest hits- "Let `Em In" and "Silly Love Songs." While there are some people who don't like these songs (especially the latter), I have a soft spot for them. There are other great songs on here with some of them sounding better when performed live. For example, Laine's "Time to Hide" and the heavy "Beware My Love" are great songs but have more of a punch to them when they were performed live. Speed of Sound also holds the distinction of being the only Wings album to feature all of the members singing at least one song. Laine gets two sing two songs- the aforementioned "Time to Hide" and his sorrowful "The Note You Never Wrote" (the latter of which has a killer guitar solo). Being a fan of McCulloch, I do enjoy the guitar-driven "Wino Junko," which is another rocker about the dangers of drugs (unfortunately for McCulloch, he would die from a drug overdose three years after the release of this album). Joe English even gets to sing a song- the McCartney-penned "Must Do Something About It," which is a really great deep track on here.
