Wings will always be funny to me! Best Sit-com Ever!,
By G. Stewart "Debussy & Sibelius Freak" (Chesapeake, VA USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Wings - The Fifth Season (DVD)
Well, they have finally come to their senses and have started releasing the show on DVD. All I can say is it's about time. This was the funniest show of the 90's and it is my personal favorite sit-com of all time.
It just doesn't get any better. The characters are great; Joe, the anal and overly sensitive older brother; Brian, the flyboy (literally and figuratively); Helen, the quick-witted, smart-mouthed, lifelong friend; Fay, the (somewhat disfunctional) mother figure to everyone; Roy, the competition, a pain in the butt, but still always around causing trouble; and my personal favorites, Lowell and Antonio, Lowell being the village idiot that's good with a wrench but bad with everything else, and Antonio, the Italian cabby with a heart of gold but a long-fuse and a sarcastic, cynical outlook. Season 5 was the second best season, # 4 being the best, in my ever so humble opinion. The episodes were as follows: 1) Stop in the Name of Love: Brian decides celibacy is the best way to keep his relationship with Alex on the right track; a problem for Brian. 2) Terminal Jealousy: Roy plays pranks; Brian gets the idea that Joe and Alex have something going and Helen insults a health inspector. 3) Bye-Bye Bunny: Lowell and Bunny divorce, resulting in an unexpected twist; Antonio helps a woman upset about her cheating husband when he finds the mans cell phone in his cab. 4) Business or Pleasure: Joe asks Helen to entertain a potential investor, but Joe's idea of "entertaining" may be a little too much to ask, even if Helen likes the guy. 5) An Affair to Forget: Fay and Antonio try to help Roy change his look in order to impress a woman. Joe flies Alex, Brian and Helen to Vermont where the weather creates problems for everyone but Joe. 6) Black Eye Affair: Helen tries to create a perfect evening for her boyfriend Davis, but before he arrives everything goes wrong, from hair, to makeup, to the chef (Lowell is great in this episode), to the black eye. ***This was one of the best episodes ever*** 7) Joe Blows (part 1): Joe takes off after a really bad day (everyone wants something from Joe and drives him crazy), and an irate passenger pushes him over the edge. 8) Joe Blows (part 2): Joe returns to find Brian has righted the airline, sort of, and they agree to be partners (sort of). 9) 2 Good 2 B 4 Gotten: Joe is scared when the girl from high school that had a crush on him returns to Nantucket. No one believes him when he explains her obsession. ***Another one of the best episodes*** 10) Come Fly with Me: Fay, Antonio and Roy get together to try and win a radio contest. Joe, Brian, Helen and Lowell go to Boston and end up at a strange party. 11) Happy Holidays: A not so happy Christmas with Fay and Helen fighting over the party, Antonio hooking up with Lowell's ex-wife. 12) Ready, Teddy, Go: Helen finds some lingerie in Davis' luggage which sparks a problem; is it for her or is it for someone else. She doesn't like it either way. 13) Oh Give Me A Home Where the Mathers Don't Roam: Brian and Joe kick Lowell out of the house after they grow tired of his strict behavior. 14) The Faygitive: A stranger is looking for Fay and hires a PI to assist, and Antonio gets free cable from Roy's friend. 15) Say Uncle, Carlton: Antonio take a job as a chauffeur for an annoying old man, and then the annoying old man's annoying nephew shows up. 16) Hey Nineteen: Joe dates a 19 year old for fun, but Helen is annoyed (and used to be her babysitter); Roy and Antonio find (and fight over) a dog that women can't resist. 17) Exclusively Yours: Brian commits to Alex only to have Joe fly in models to Nantucket; Helen names items on her menu after people at the airport (Lowell-slaw), but the people take offense at the comparisons. 18) Moonlighting: The gang reminisces about second jobs to help Alex feel less ashamed of her second job. 19) Sleepless in Nantucket: Joe helps Brian move in (and out and in and out) with Alex as the couple try to get accustomed to each others habits. 20) Boys will be Girls: Joe and Brian play a prank on their returning coach who torementd them; but when he dies in the night and is discovered dressed as a woman, Joe and Brian must make things right, sort of. 21) Roy Crazy: Roy's ex-wife, who he has told everyone had died, shows up on the island and Roy wants to get back together. Too bad thats not what she wants. Helen has a not so secret admirer from The Crab Shack. 22) Long Distance Lament: Joe has 2 dates, and lies to get out of one, which backfires. Davis cancels on Helen again and Helen goes out with someone else, but Davis shows up after all. 23) Call of the Wild: Brian's old friend is a bad influence on Brian. Lowells' childhood idol shows up on the island, a little less than a superhero, but Lowell still worships him. 24) A Decent Proposal: Joe is trying to get a loan for the floundering Sandpiper airline while Helen gets an unexpected mid-week visit from Davis. The result of the two events is strange, to say the least.

The BEST!,

I won't list the episodes as someone already has (Thanks!) But this is the only TV show I have EVER wanted to own. I have been waiting for this season to come out on DVD, just like I waited for all the others. This one got a little weird in the last season, just like most series tend to; it's difficult to keep up the momentum. But I will probably still buy it just so I can have them all. This was the funniest show I have ever seen and I STILL love it even watching it more than just a few times on DVD. This is definitely one worth keeping!

This is by far the best tv show of all time. Even my seven year old son begs to watch it. I can't wait to own them all. Also, check out Tim Daly in Private Practice on ABC in September. He has always been my favorite.

High with Wings,
This review is from: Wings - The Fifth Season (DVD)
I loved WINGS. It was a lot like CHEERS but maybe not as serious (although, CHEERS was rarely serious.) WINGS was the type of show that I could always watch and purely laugh and be entertained. There are very few shows that have that quality.
My favorite characters are: Brian ("Single White Female" star, Steven Weber,) Antonio ("Munk" star, Tony Shalhoub) & of course Roy Biggins (David Schramm.) Roy is a lot like Norm, but with a mean-spirted side. I really like all the characters on the show, but I have to be honest, I wasn't overly crazy about Alex (Farrah Forke.) Where Helen ("Happy Days" & "Its A Living" star, Crystal Bernard) was sweet and funny, Alex always seemed like she had a small chip on her shoulder and had something to prove. Does anyone else agree? Rounding out this very comical ensemble-cast is, Fay Cochran (Rebecca Schull,) Lowell Mather (played by the Oscar-Nominated, Thomas Haden Church) and Joe Hackett (Tim Daily.) Season 5 has to be one of the best seasons of this series because all the shows perfect. Here are all the episodes: Stop in the Name of Love 9/16/1993 Everyone is of course skeptical when Brian announces that his relationship with Alex is "special." Terminal Jealousy 9/23/1993 As usual, Roy decides to have some fun at everyone else's expense. Bye-Bye, Bunny 9/30/1993 Lowell and Bunny commemorate their divorce by hopping in the sack together. Business or Pleasure 10/7/1993 Intent on expanding Sandpiper, Joe brings in potential investor Davis Lynch from New York. An Affair to Forget 10/14/1993 Joe is down in the dumps when he becomes Brian and Alex's private chauffeur to their Vermont trip and Helen's to New York City to see Davis. Black Eye Affair 10/28/1993 Helen has a heck of a time getting ready for Davis' impending visit (she gets a black eye and her hair turns green!) Joe Blows (1) 11/4/1993 Tired of his stressful life, Joe leaves Nantucket. Joe Blows (2) 11/11/1993 Brian is finally able to get Joe to come back. 2 Good 2 B 4 Gotten 11/18/1993 Kooky Sandy Cooper comes back to Nantucket and Joe is in fear of his life. Come Fly with Me 12/2/1993 Joe, Brian, Helen and Lowell all find themselves without a date on a Saturday night. Happy Holidays 12/16/1993 Christmastime brings some extra joy to the terminal, including Bunny. Ready, Teddy, Go 1/6/1994 Much to Helen's delight (and surprise,) Davis finally shows up after a long string of canceled dates. Oh, Give Me a Home Where the Mathers Don't Roam 1/20/1994 Brian and Joe kick Lowell out. The Faygitive 1/27/1994 Fay is frightened when she learns that someone has been asking questions about her. Say Uncle, Carlton 2/3/1994 Antonia gets a second job as Carlton Blanchard's driver. Hey, Nineteen 2/10/1994 Joe starts dating a 19 year-old girl; in stark contrast to Helen's feelings. Exclusively Yours 2/14/1994 Brian's libido races and his commitment to Alex is tested when a group of models flies into the island. Moonlighting 2/17/1994 Alex feels insecure (yet again) when she's forced to take another job. Sleepless in Nantucket 3/10/1994 Brian moves in with Alex and then can't get out quick enough. Boys Will Be Girls 4/7/1994 Joe and Brian plan a practical joke on their high-school coach that comes to the island; unfortunately, it backfires. Roy Crazy 4/14/1994 The news of Roy's ex-wife, Sylvia, surprises everyone; especially Roy. Long Distance Lament 4/28/1994 Davis cancels on Helen yet again. Call of the Wild 5/5/1994 Alex throws Brian out after he parities with an old friend. A Decent Proposal 5/12/1994 Joe's trying to raise more capital for his airline.

5 stars for show content not video quality,
By Denise (KC, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wings - The Fifth Season (DVD)
It's Wings so I could never give it less than 3-5 stars (though the last couple of seasons are not great) but I would give the DVD quality a big fat "F" as it's utterly worthless. The quality is slightly better than my video tapes which are now 10-17 years old. Sad that such a high quality show would be reduced to such low quality DVD releases.
Enough complaining. It's Wings. Nuff said. Ok, so this is this is the next to last truly awesome season before the show headed downward with Season 6 being the last hoorah. This is the season where Alex shows up and we have to live with her before she's replaced with an even more annoying Casey. It's also the last full season where the entire original cast is together as Season 6 features a big exit by one of the main players. Being a fan of the Joe and Helen relationship, this season is wonderful in that they are forced to wrecken with the feelings between them. Of course, it's not a simple matter. But it's a great ride while they try to sort out which way is up and which is down. This is the most important continuing storyline throughout this particular season which was an adventure in madness...in more ways that one. Season 5 features many great laughs and some funny new characters. Crab anyone? My family sat mesmerized by the TV all weekend after we received the set in the mail. Watching the new DVDs gave us the itch to rewatch our favorite episodes from the previous 4 seaons. Ann Margaret. What a great way to spend time with the family. Laughing ourselves silly. Thanks Wings. We love you. We can't wait until Season 6 is on DVD. It will be a long six months.

Paramount's at it again, edited episodes,
By Yankee Mike (Brooklyn,NY) - See all my reviews

I just saw an advance copy of season five of "Wings" and on the back of the box is written "Some episodes may be edited from their original network versions". It seems like Paramount is either changing music or releasing edited episodes on almost all their recent TV show releases. Season 5 was one of the best seasons of "Wings" and I hope we are going to get most of the episodes in their original form.

Humor NOT found,
By
This review is from: Wings - The Fifth Season (DVD)
Ok, so the title is misleading regarding the content of my review, but the negative comments always like to be read, so now is my chance to RAVE about WINGS!!!!!
I'll keep it short and sweet. -Wings has humor that is not found in today's shows, or even those found in shows from the 90's. -The cast was phenomenal. Simple, funny, and believeable. -While watching Wings, you almost like you became part of their circle of friends. -The show was WAYYYY before its time...kinda like Rick Astley. -I started watching Wings when I was 12. You do the math to guess how old I am. And while you're at it...you can be in awe that the show captivated my attention. I taped all the episodes when they aired on USA. -I had a MAJOR crush on Joe Hackett. That is one amazingly handsome man. He deserved more roles than what he got after Wings. -Newer characters added were kinda annoying (Casey Chapel, Alex Lambert, etc) -One man. One name. "Antonio Scrappachi." If you get that one, you're a true fan. -After months of writing CBS and begging for them to release the show on DVD...they finally listened. -I'll be showing my kids this show and God willing, they'll appreciate it as much as I did. -If you like good humor, buy the DVDs. Do yourself a favor and watch Wings. You'll be hooked. By FAR, the best and most memorable sitcom if all time. It's my #1.

The Fifth of Wings,
By
This review is from: Wings - The Fifth Season (DVD)
Wings was the funniest sit-com on TV in the '90s and if you were a fan like me, you'll want this complete collection of all the episodes from season five. All the elements are here from Brian's awful neckties to Tony Shalhoub's hilarious Italian cabbie. The highlights are the two episode shows where Joe chucks the airline for a tropical island, the episode where an ex-highschool classmate stalks Joe but no one believes him, and the show where the obnoxious but hilarious character Carlton Blanchard hires Antonio to chauffer him about the island. I still laugh at Lowell's non-sequitors, Helen's Virginia accent, and Fay's disarming delivery. This show was a classic. On the down side there are absolutely no DVD extras here: Zero, Zip, Nada AND the DVD quality is decidedly low definition. Thanks for nothing Paramount/CBS.

Favorite Season!,
By Allison Lynn Venezio (Jersey Shore, NJ, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wings - The Fifth Season (DVD)
Last year, I was inspired to give this show a try after not having seen it in syndication since around 2000 (by my own fault - I was in 11th grade and was busy with school). It seems that the years between high school and college weren't prime times for me to get back into alot of the shows I'd lost touch with over the years. Last year, during my seasonal lay-off from my job, I found the "Wings" in a TV line-up and decided that I wanted to give this show a try.
Well, I soon remembered why I fell in love with this show at an early age (I was 7 years old when it premiered in early 1990). The episodes are funny in a dry wit kind of way, and these characters are not only believable but they're also funny - each has his or her own personality and quirk that makes them so interesting. Though I had seen every early season to some extent in the original run and syndication, the first season I can remember vividly would be the 5th season, which aired when I was in 5th grade. That being said, this is probably my favorite season of "Wings," as a majority of my favorite episodes came from this season. In season 5, the relationship between Brian and Alex is explored and grows (of course, we all know how that ends up), Helen is courted by a rich business man named Davis Lynch, whom Joe cannot stand...which brings me to Joe. Joe has some (mis)adventures of his own - he runs off in an attempt to escape his mundane life on Nantucket in a really good 2-part episode (the first part is on my long list of favorite episodes), and dates a 19-year old girl. And, upon finding out that Helen is going to be marrying Davis Lynch, he and Helen wind up in one of the best cliffhangers from this show's run. Even the season started off strong, with a non-cliffhanger that probably made more than a few happy (I myself am an impatient viewer when it comes to cliffhangers, so watching anything in syndication is a blessing, as at the most, I have to wait a weekend to see the riveting conclusion). I also love the clothes that some of the main characters wear - Joe's perfectly coordinated shirts and ties make him stylish and handsome, and I actually will admit I had alot of similar skirt-and-blouse outfits to the ones Helen wore this season, and wore alot of vests like she did - in fact, as I got a little bit older, I wore similar outfits to the ones she wore in the later seasons. I also love Brian's hair - Steven Weber was one of my earliest crushes (I actually loved him before Tim Daly became appealing to me), and I just always loved when he has long hair. And I love Daly's "wedge" style haircut - I actually find that haircut quite handsome in a 90s sense. Favorite Episodes of Season 5 (in no order): Stop in the Name of Love Bye, Bye Bunny Oh, Give Me a Home Where the Mathers Don't Roam Business or Pleasure Roy Crazy Joe Blows (Part 1) Terminal Jealousy An Affair to Forget Boys Will Be Girls Long Distance Lament Sleepless in Nantucket A Decent Affair Call of the Wild Overall, I highly recommend this season - this show was truly in it's prime by this season but definitely far from outliving its welcome. If you have yet to finish you collection, make sure this one is part of it. This is a season that is guaranteed for some good laughs. So, prepare for takeoff, looks like clear skies - and laughs - are ahead in "Wings" Season 5! |
