A good Grouse manual, January 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wings of Thunder: New England Grouse Hunting Revisited (Hardcover)
I read this over the weekend and it was enjoyable. I have read so many sporting books familiarity had me prepared to be disappointed but it held its own. The title wouldn't be my choice but once past that the book does well. Mulak loosely bases his book on the classic New England Grouse Shooting by William H. Foster but there isn't all that much said about it. A read of Foster's book would be helpful in comparing the two. Foster's illustrations alone are worth seeing and are the strongest point of that book. Mulak's book doesn't have comparable illustrations but none do nowadays. The book is a regional book and as such I would have preferred more of a sense of place than there is but any grouse hunter should enjoy it. It is a good manual. There are some worthwhile tips in it even for the addicted grouse hunters and we know who we are. His closing comments on conservation were perceptive and strong with no punches pulled.
