Wings Toward the South: The First Hundred Years of Congregation Agudath Achim [Hardcover]

Susan Gross (Author)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

May 1, 1999
This book chronicles the historic Shreveport, Louisiana Jewish congregation, Agudath Achim. The congregation, founded in 1902, was the first Orthodox congregation to construct its own synagogue in Shreveport. It remains in existence as the only traditional Jewish congregation in the region. Its cemetery is listed on the National Historic Register.

The book discusses the evolution of local Jewish practice over the course of the 20th century. Of particular interest is the way in which female participation in the ritual has gradually increased, paralleling this movement in the larger American society. The book also deals with local responses to such major world events as the Holocaust and the birth of the modern state of Israel.

Meticulously researched, the book contains over 50 archival photos and graphics. There are also many membership lists which genealogists will appreciate.

Review

"Local Author Pens Jewish History Tome"

In the just-published Wings Toward the South: the First Hundred Years of Congregation Agudath Achim, editor Susan Gross has produced a book that adds a significant piece to the Shreveport history puzzle. It is the story of a Jewish congregation that got its start in 1890 in the piney woods of Northwest Louisiana. As Agudath Achim Rabbi Foster Kawaler points out, "It is a history of the whole Jewish community here because the roots go back so far." The book also includes the Southern Jewish experience of relating to the non-Jewish community and its influences on the congregation. Was it Louisiana's Catholic Mardi Gras tradition that inspired the group's Men's Club to sponsor sweetheart/masquerade dances in February or March from 1951 to 1967? This is just one point Gross ponders.

The enormously interesting book is filled with the details of running a synagogue. The experience is universal and any person who has had the privilege of serving on a board or committee of a house of worship will appreciate the struggles presented of how to raise attendance, recruit teachers for the children and conduct successful fund-raisers. The human side of the life of the religious is very evident as witnessed in this excerpt from a 1986 bulletin that is included in the book: "Are you a kipah keeper? Is your collection of yarmulkes continuing to climb? Can you supply the Jewish community with headcoverings for a major function? We need the kipot that you have inadvertently taken from the synagogue... Please bring them back so we are well covered in the synagogue." -- Kathryn Usher, City Lights
