Book Description

May 1, 2001
  • "This outstanding collection of photographs sets Tom Vezo apart as one of the top nature photographers of today." --Don and Lillian Stokes
  • Covers habitats from around the world

Spectacular color photographs and engaging text offer a detailed portrait of birds in their natural environments, offering a glimpse of where birds live and why they live where they do. Six habitats-arctic tundra, forest and field, ocean, desert and scrubland, freshwater, and seashore-are covered in individual chapters, each providing a fascinating look at how birds are uniquely adapted for life in their own little corners of the world. Stunning images of songbirds, shorebirds, owls, eagles, seabirds, ducks, birds of the tropics-species from across North America and the Arctic-illustrate a wide range of behaviors and adaptions, making Wings in the Wild an invaluable addition to any birder's or nature-lover's library.

    Editorial Reviews

    From Library Journal

Bird photographer Vezo's superb shots of wild birds are admirably showcased in this excellent visual book, a feast for the eyes. The text by Kerlinger (How Birds Migrate, Flight Strategies of Migrating Birds) consists of glorified picture captions, but as with the rest of his writing, these are informative and cogent. Wings in the Wild does not pretend to be anything more than a coffee-table book, but it is a superior addition to this genre. The six sections, each with a brief, introductory text, are divided by habitats: "Arctic Tundra," "Forest and Field," "Marsh, Lake, and River," "Desert, Scrub, and Prairie," "Ocean and Sea" (that is, far offshore), and "Seashore." Highly recommended. Henry T. Armistead, Free Lib. of Philadelphia

If you are a birder or a photographer, Tom Vezo's photographs will make you say "WOW!". The images have great lighting, are artistically pleasing, are very close-up, and are extremely sharp, while the text is succinct and highly informative. If you buy this book, you will NOT be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Want the Best, Well This is It!, April 1, 2007
This review is from: Wings In the Wild: Habits and Habitats of North American Birds (Paperback)
You would never buy this book for Paul Kerlinger, you buy it for Tom Vezo - who is, perhaps, the best bird photographer alive. Wings in the Wild is a fantastic table book of bird photographs of such outstanding quality that, even as a serious birder, you can learn things about how birds really appear. Tom is a very serious birder who has a magical eye - he takes honest pictures of viewing opportunities we simply dream about. I mean "honest" to indicate that he does not doctor-up the pictures or try to fool us with Photoshop wizardry. David Carlisle
