Product Description

Winix FresHome Series P450

The Winix FresHome P450 is the largest and most powerful air cleaner in the FresHome Series and incorporates the best air cleaning technologies to capture all of the unseen particles suspended in the air, including dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, mold spores, organic chemicals, and household odors.

Winix FresHome Series P450
Winix's FresHome 3-Stage Air Cleaning Process

Featuring a 3-Stage Air Cleaning System, the P450 first forces your home's air through an Activated Carbon Pre-Filter, which removes household odors, hair, lint, and other large particles, and helps to extend the overall life of your HEPA filter and reduces the amount of housekeeping, by reducing the amount of dust in the room it is kept. The True-HEPA Filter is the second stage in the FresHome P150's Air Cleaning System. Winix's True-HEPA Filter is designed to capture a variety of particles that are unable to be seen by the human eye; these particles include: pet dander, smoke, pollen, mold spores, and many other irritating allergens. Finally, the third stage in Winix's 3-Stage Air Cleaning Process is Winix's own PlasmaWave Technology, which is responsible for safely breaking apart odors, chemical vapors, and other pollutants, at the molecular level. Winix's PlasmaWave Technology offers you superior all-around cleaning, without generating harmful ozone.

Additional Features of the Winix FresHome Series P450

The FresHome P450 3-Stage Air Cleaning Process effectively removes a variety of allergens and airborne pollutants including: dust, smoke, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. In addition to an excellent filtration system the FresHome P450 covers the largest room size of the series (450 sq. ft. ) and capitalizes on a variety of other helpful features.

It can go from whisper quiet that you can hardly hear up to full blast on turbo.
On automatic, which is where I've kept it since my air quality went to 'good' it's been fairly quiet and doesn't seem to be working too hard.

It also comes with a remote with controls for power, fan speed, Turbo, and Auto.

I received my Winix today, so this is my initial rating and impression.

- Easy to set up
- Has a remote
- Looks nice
- VERY quiet on low speed
- Moves a lot of air on Turbo

- Cannot shut off Plasmawave
- 3-Stage Filtration vs. 5-Stage in other Winix models
- High and Turbo modes produce a VERY noticable "whistling" noise

To elaborate on my dislikes. Since this unit had a remote, I was hoping that they preserved the on/off feature from other Winix units for the Plasmawave. No such luck. This was a bit of a disappointment but not a deal breaker in and of itself. However, this brings me to my second issue.

Turning this on High or Turbo produces a very noticeable whistling or whine. This noise is NOT the Plasmawave (that has a distinct chirping noise and is surprisingly hard to detect); it almost sounds like a bad fan or harmonics from moving so much air. Looking at the unit at max settings, there is a slight vibration which makes me suspect that the fan is unbalanced.

I will let it run for a day or two and see if it goes away on its own... but I suspect that I may have to return the unit for another. I didn't see this noise mentioned in any of the other reviews, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

[UPDATE: 03/26/2013]

I received a second unit and it demonstrated the same high pitched noise. I tried to ignore it, but it's been driving both me and my wife crazy. The fan also pulsates (doesn't maintain constant revolutions at a given speed), adding to the annoyance. I don't know if I received two lemons, but ended up buying the Winix WAC9500 Ultimate Pet. So far the WAC9500 is awesome.

Hope this helps someone.

As soon as we had this unit set up and running, we instantly noticed a change in the air quality within our 700 sq. ft. loft in the heart of downtown LA. While we would normally have to dust our furniture every other day to keep the dust at bay, with this unit, it became a once-a-week chore (if at that).

The unit IS very effective at removing dust particles, as well as odor in our place, despite its advertised space rating of 450 sq. ft. And as advertised, it IS indeed very quiet, although there is a bit of a buzzing noise from the PlasmaWave that others have mentioned in their reviews (this was not loud enough to be of concern, and I am well-known amongst my peers to be extremely sensitive to noise). In summary, I would say that the unit definitely functions beyond its advertised specifications.

I seldom review products I purchase on Amazon, but this time I felt like I had to, and the reasons are as follows...

As I said before, this is a fantastic unit that will beyond any doubt greatly improve the air quality of your home. BUT!!!
- It does not work too well in its "Auto" setting, which will remain on the lowest setting most of the time, unable to circulate the air in the room sufficiently enough for its sensor to detect pollutants, odor, etc.. If I left the unit on on Auto over night, I would wake up with it stuck in the lowest fan setting in the morning. Granted, it could have been that it kept working so well overnight, that the air quality indeed WAS still great in the morning...

I agree with the previous poster about the 'howl'. On high or turbo there is a high-pitched whine or howl that is annoying, but we only run on those settings when we are not at home, to clean the air for cooking odors, or if it is particularly dusty. The low setting is very quiet and the 'normal' setting barely noticeable.

We replaced a Kenmore electrostatic model that had a cleanable filter cell, and when the cell finally failed we chose this model for replacement. I believe it does a very good job and has the greater air handling volume we needed for our living room plus kitchen area. We also have a Kenmore non-electrostatic unit we moved to the living room (to attempt to replace the electrostatic model) but it did not clean the air as well as this P450 (the Kenmore couldn't knock down a dusty smell).

The air quality sensor does work, as the fan will ramp up as it detects contaminated air. For example, when I got home from work I used some hand sanitizer as I came in the door and after I walked past the P450 it showed an 'orange' level of contamination and sped up the fan until it deemed the air clean again (in auto mode). I also notice it ramping up every now and then for some change in air quality I can't perceive.

On Turbo setting, although noisy, to run in that mode for an hour really cleans the air- we have a lot of dust here this time of year.

A tip for users (gleaned from an air cleaner review site): when you first plug in the P450 it establishes a baseline for the air quality sensor so, if the air is dirty, it will consider that air quality as normal and only ramp up if it gets dirtier.
