Editorial Reviews

Review

Bright patterns and heavy textures give the paper-collage illustrations a 3D look.  Phillipps cranks up the visual energy by strewing her brightly lit street scenes with laughing figures, arms and legs flung out joyfully.  Not a snoozer!
--Kirkus

Phillipps offers wit aplenty in cut-paper compositions that match Wink's boundless energy and bravado. Even when sleepy, her hero demands to be noticed. --Publisher's Weekly

More About the Author

It all started with a Halloween costume. A boy in a bright red ninja costume was hopping around, waving his arms, and my husband remarked, "That's a ninja who wants to be noticed."

Three years later, my first picture book, WINK: THE NINJA WHO WANTED TO BE NOTICED was published.

If you liked the first Wink book, perhaps you'd enjoy the second, WINK: THE NINJA WHO WANTED TO NAP. My first non-ninja book, MONKEY ONO, is about a stuffed monkey who desperately wants to get to the beach and tries many Mission:Impossible style plans to get there. My most recent book, THE SIMPLES LOVE A PICNIC is a silly story about a simple little family who wants to have a simply little picnic, but things get very, very complicated!

I'm a busy mom, wife, artist, writer, illustrator, and cat owner. The sled:person ratio in our house is 3:1, and I own the world's cheapest and most un-cool cell phone. I am a hella good baker and a hella bad housekeeper. To see what I'm up to visit my blog: www.ninjawoman.blogspot.com or my website: www.jcphillipps.com.

My little girls loved WINK, the Ninja Who Wanted to Be Noticed, and they were soooo excited to see the new book come in the mail!

Their favorite parts are the chase scenes. They love looking for him on every page when his persistent fans keep tracking him down, and they laugh every time when the fans corner another Wink who isn't Wink.

I personally love the artwork besides the cute story, and my girls especially love that Wink has a panda bear to nap with.

Yaaaay, Wink! Your new adventure is a big hit in our house!

All three kids in our house had been anxiously awaiting the latest WINK installment, and it doesn't disappoint! My kids love following Wink from place to place and were delighted with the ninjas who impersonate Wink in their quest to give the famous ninja some shut-eye. My 11-year-old said she was inspired by J.C. Phillipps' art, and I have to agree. Ms. Phillipps has outdone herself this time--the detail in the illustrations is nothing short of amazing. Brava!

My godson and I were both transfixed with this follow-up adventure of Wink. The story is delightful and smartly appeals the inner mischief-maker in us all. Ms. Phillipps' artwork is a joy to gaze upon - - we kept going back to re-study the pages. I have a feeling my godson's mother will be reading this sequel to his class, just as she did with the first book. Simply put: it makes you smile.

No spoiler, but I really love the ending. And the pictures are super fun because you discover clever new details each time you read it. We look at the collage pictures A WHOLE LOT (parents, you know) and the cut paper pieces are themselves interesting, like with Eric Carle.

Love this story, love the paper collage illustrations, and all of the fun details. My son (6) chooses this one over and over again for bedtime reading.
