PreSchool-Grade 1. In simple rhyme, Maccarone describes the activities of a group of students as they participate in a gym class. Sam is always the slowest and the most clumsy, until he succeeds in making the winning basket. Lewin's simple watercolor cartoons depict telling facial expressions and plenty of action. A good addition to easy-reader collections.?Christina Dorr, Calcium Primary School, NY

Preschool^-Gr. 1. A lively sports backdrop will draw children to this story in which one member of a multicultural class of youngsters (including a child in a wheelchair) finally finds a sport he's good at. Betsy Lewin's artwork is colorful but sometimes so vigorous it overwhelms the text, and although the greatly enlarged type will help make reading easy, it doesn't do much to balance the design. The sports and the simply stated message about sweet success make the difference here.
