Sam is always the slowest and the most clumsy, until he succeeds in making the winning basket. Lewin's simple watercolor cartoons depict telling facial expressions and plenty of action. Preschool^-Gr. 1. A lively sports backdrop will draw children to this story in which one member of a multicultural class of youngsters (including a child in a wheelchair) finally finds a sport he's good at. Betsy Lewin's artwork is colorful but sometimes so vigorous it overwhelms the text, and although the greatly enlarged type will help make reading easy, it doesn't do much to balance the design. Part of the Hello Reader Series, this Level 1 book features a popular and energetic girl, who we see in a typical gym class, playing along with her classmates. Her physical disability is not mentioned and she plays a small part in the book but it shows inclusion very well.
