Book Description

Timothy Zahn’s upcoming novel Scoundrels, starring Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian, returns to the excitement of the classic Star Wars films. In this thrilling prequel eBook novella, Winner Lose All, Lando and a pair of unlikely allies find themselves involved in a dangerous game. Fortunately, Lando can survive against the odds—a skill that he will need in spades.
Lando Calrissian’s no stranger to card tournaments, but this one has a truly electrifying atmosphere. That’s because the prize is a rare sculpture worth a whopping fifty million credits. If Lando’s not careful, he’s going to go bust, especially after meeting identical twins Bink and Tavia Kitik, master thieves who have reason to believe that the sculpture is a fake. The Kitiks are beautiful, dangerous, and determined to set things right—and they’ve convinced Lando to help them expose the scam. But what they’re up against is no simple double cross, nor even a twisted triple cross. It is a full-blown power play of colossal proportions. For an unseen mastermind holds all the cards and has a fail-proof solution for every problem: murder.

4.0 out of 5 stars an introduction to Bink and Tavia from Scoundrels December 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Full disclosure: I read an advance copy of Timothy Zahn's Scoundrels: Star Wars and so I already know that story. That means I'm probably one of the few people who read Scoundrels before having read Winner Lose All. That certainly colored my perception of this novella and probably allowed me to get more out of it.

While Winner Lose All is billed as a story about Lando Calrissian, I think Zahn intended Winner Lose All to serve primarily as an introduction to Bink and Tavia, two of his new creations. Bink and Tavia are twins who are essentially cat burglars ("ghost thieves", in the lingo of Star Wars). They're spunky and have some moments of endearing humor, but I suspect a lot of readers won't really know why it's worth reading a book about these two. Winner Lose All doesn't introduce them nearly as effectively as Scoundrels does. While I love the characters as developed in Scoundrels, here you could be forgiven for wondering why Zahn felt compelled to write this story.

However, having read Scoundrels, having gotten to know Bink, Tavia, and Zerba, it was fun to see them on another escapade. This time, Lando joins a Sabacc tournament in order to win a priceless art piece, but discovers a deeper conspiracy. Lando unwittingly gets recruited in Bink and Tavia's attempt to uncover the conspiracy. Granted, the story in Winner Lose All certainly isn't necessary to understanding Scoundrels, but Zahn does a set up an intriguing heist attempt. Nothing special, but a fun romp.

Unfortunately, despite the title, this is certainly not "A Lando Calrissian Tale". Lando himself only has a bit role. Some of my favorite Lando moments are when he has to face down a table of players at a Sabacc table.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining taste of things to come. December 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In this prequel novella to the upcoming novel "Scoundrels", Timothy Zahn slips effortlessly back into the heart of the Star Wars saga, visiting one Lando Calrissian during the time period between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Zahn keeps the pace quick and does an admirable job in giving us the conflicted rogue that Empire showed Lando to be. Zahn has shown a respectful affection for the universe set forth in the original trilogy and this novella indicates that these new stories will be equally as respectful. I started it earlier this evening and couldn't put it down. Bring on "Scoundrels"!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Price July 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Although I've already read Scoundrels, this $2 novella by Timothy Zahn was difficult for me to pass up. Here we are first introduced to Bink, Tavia, and Zerba, who are all present in the following novel, and while Lando is supposedly the main character of the story the three new characters get most of the focus. The e-book is a quick, fun read, well worth the price for those considering it, but if you've already read Scoundrels you're really not missing much, so if that's the case it becomes a question of necessity. For a lead-in story you don't learn a great deal more about the characters than what's in the full novel, and for me personally it didn't have a SW-feel to it outside of a few names and technobabble; much like Scoundrels did despite my enjoyment of both stories.

If you're a fan of Zahn's Star Wars books, or science fiction in general as this book and the next suits a wider audience, I'd recommend getting this as a warm-up for the larger story. For those expecting a deeper insight into Zahn's new characters, as well as Lando, that simply isn't the case here, so holding out for Scoundrels may be a better choice for some, especially since both may be offered together in the next edition coming out in November I believe.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read! June 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Timothy Zahn has always been a fantastic author. With Winner Lose All he certainly maintains that same level and surpasses it. a very wonderful way to explain the back story of everyone's second favorite gambler & smuggler ( next to Han Solo). A must read for all fans of the Star Wars franchise.

This was a quick and entertaining read. It was interesting to read a story knowing it was a Star Wars book, yet the element of not having Luke, Han, and Leia made it seem a bit strange. Overall it was fun to read and showed Lando in his true element. I would recommend this to any SW fans, as well as non SW fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars good filler material April 6, 2014

The characters are done well enough for my enjoyment. The plot isn't my main concern. This story stays out of the Star Wars main story line.

Great novella to bring one of the most beloved characters to the forefront once again. Can never get tired of the genius of Lando on his own!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, entertaining read March 18, 2014

The story is short, but well written. Enjoyed the back story associated with a few of the "cast members" from Zahn's Soundrels.
