I used this book with 5th grade reluctant readers and found them not able to put it down. Since it is easier reading than many books of 5th grade interest and it moves quickly, the kids loved it. I actually had a boy reading it going down the hall to lunch who hated reading. He kept running into the child in front of him because he was reading.

One Friday morning, Bart Collins went out for his morning run at 5:00am like he does every morning to train for the biggest race of the year. The Boolhmsday race. When he went past his friends who live across the street he saw a white van in the driveway. He saw two men loading stuff into the van. Bart wondered if Lisa was moving, or if she was being robed. Bart wanted to make sure that every thing was ok, so he stopped and asked what was going on? The two men stopped and looked at him there was a tall one and a short one. The tall one said that every thing was ok they were moving. Bart wondered why Lisa didn't tell him that she was moving. He was wondering if that was true or not. Just to be sure he wrote the license plate number. That night Bart and his friends got drunk and ran out in the middle of the street and was hit by a car. The next thing he knew he was in the hospital. He didn't no what had happened. Then the nurse told him that he had been hit by a car and would be o.k. The next day when Bart woke up the doctor was in his room. He tested Bart. When the doctor came in later that day. He had told Bart that he was paralyzed form the waste down. Bart's friends came to see him he had asked what had happened whit Lisa. His friends didn't no what happened to her. Later that day Bart found out that Lisa was kidnapped. Bart had never met Lisa mother but wanted to call and find out more about Lisa. Bart called and asked for Lisa. Lisa's mother told him that she was kidnapped. Bart told her that he might no something about the kidnapping. Lisa's mother went to the hospital as soon as they got of the phone. The police got there before Lisa's mother got there. Bart talked to the cops and told then about the van. The cop wanted to know if he could describe the van. Bart said that he got the license plate number, but he couldn't remember it. Then the nurse told him to try to remember what he wrote down and it worked. He remembered, then told it to the cop.
When Lisa got to the kidnappers house she got away. About 3 minuets before the kidnappers relied that she was gone. When they went out side the say the cops were there and the two men ran opposite ways. The shout one (Fuzzy) got coughed. But the other one got away. Soon after the tall one got away Bart got kidnapped by someone. When they got into the elevator he realized that it was the tall one (Steve). When they got to the car Bart tried to get away. The only thing that Bart could do was punch Steve. So he did rite in the bottom on the jaw. That knocked him out. Bart had the chance he pulled him self to and up the stairs. When he got to the top he welled for help. One of the nurse herd him and went to help. Bart told the nurse and she called the cops and they came and arrested Steve. Bart raced in the wheel chair division instead on running. All of his friends came see him. Lisa told Bart that no matter what he is a winner because of what he did.





I liked this book because it kind of sounds like something that would happen today. I like how Bart lived for his dream even after he found out that he was prelisted. I think that it's important to have confidences in your self. If I were Bart I would be proud of how I saved Lisa and how I lived for my dream. Bart also saved his relationship with his best friends. If this book had more in a series I would like to read them. It was fun to read, I like mysteries and this was kind of a mystery. I did enjoy the book. I can't wait o read the next book.

I like Peg Kehret The Winner.It is a good book because it is somewhat exciding. Once you pick up this book you wont want to put it down, I know I didn't. It has an intersting story about a boy who wants to be a track star. Peg Kehrets book The Winner is a very exciding story, and I would recomend it to anybody over the age of 10.
