Book Description

May 13, 1999
The 21st Century will be an unprecedented and unpredictable time for change. Yet despite the uncertainties that may appear unsettling for some, the new millennium can be a bright and exciting place to build a rewarding, positive future, according to the new book, Winner Takes All: Exceptional People Teach Us How to Find Career and Personal Success in the 21st Century. Whether we are Baby Boomers, Generation Xers or individuals just coming of age at the turn of the century, to be successful in a future of unknowns we must be willing to embrace change and tackle problems differently. The old rules no longer apply, according to Nelson, an Encino, California clinical psychologist and author. Traditional problem-solving approaches will be insufficient or ineffective. In Winner Takes All, Nelson includes the incredible stories of exceptional people who have risen above the challenges they faced. These "Winners" are individuals from all walks of life, from so-called "ordinary people" to celebrities like Christopher Reeve and Muhammad Ali. Winner Takes All shares the secrets of how these Winners faced a future suddenly filled with frightening unknowns without traditional moorings (as many of us will face in the 21st Century), and yet were able to create successful and satisfying lives for themselves. Nelson shows, in a seven-step process, how Winners reach out to the future for solutions to their problems and challenges instead of into a past that holds less and less relevance. She discusses what constitutes a Winner's belief system and how a certain type of belief opens the future in a positive and dynamic way. Nelson also explores how Winners focus on their dreams for the future to pull them forward and how those dreams are translated into compelling and realistic goals. She delves into a Winner's approach to resources and shows us the attitudes that Winners use to lead them into a successful future and the attitudes that must be left behind. Finally, she examines the skills that Winners use to keep on winning, even as the future shifts and changes. Winners come in all shapes and sizes, representing all ages, ethnicities, physical capabilities and genders. What sets Winners apart from those who view the future with trepidation, is not their outward appearance, education or ability, says Nelson, but their inner traits and qualities, she believes, we all share but often fail to use in a winning way. “I wrote Winner Takes All as a manual for success in the coming century,” Nelson explains “Anyone who looks ahead wondering 'How am I going to succeed?', 'How am I going to make it?', will find their confidence restored in the inspiring stories and advice contained in the book. I believe we can all live better, happier lives, but most of us simply lack the skills to do so. I'm out to change that.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

Everybody's talkin' millennium. Everybody also seems to know what we should do to prepare for the fin de siecle. What seems to be coming out of all this "prospecting" is one clear certainty: uncertainty. With all the "future shocks" of the past twenty years, the very weave of things seems tenuous at best. In Response to this, there has been a veritable explosion of advice on how to "hit the ground running" in the years to come, and how to ensure that you are doing so in the right direction. As with so much of this literature, the truly salient point is not that we need some super-specialized business techniques to plot out our futures. It's about the right attitude, how we view ourselves, our dreams, our values, our responsibilities, and our worth.

Noelle Nelson's book stands out from the crowd by virtue of its focus, clarity and the author's genuine understanding of dreams and goals and how they shape our lives. Focus is the key word. Once you have a dream, no matter how humble it may seem, focus it, she tells us. Secondly, we must believe in it unshakably. This is where the winners are separated from the losers, and this is where many of us "drop the ball." When we don't believe enough in ourselves, our dreams disappear. Nelson takes us from this point and lays out a path for us that ensures our dreams don't perish there. She peppers the book with many examples of peoples' stories that demonstrate how "winners" get to be such. Their stories inspire by example. -- Library Booknotes

From the Back Cover

"In turbulent times, we need inspiration and concrete role models to get us through. Noelle Nelson offers plenty of both." (Patricia Aburdene, Co-Author, Megatrends 2000) "In this topsy-turvy rapidly changing world, Winner Takes All gives you steps to take to overcome our challenges and come out on top. To increase your ability to deal with the future, I recommend you read and apply the principles contained in this book." (J. Oliver Crom, President & CEO, Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc.) "Winner Takes All is a book about no longer taking 'no' for an answer - especially our own 'no.' It's about challenging doubt, and making great opportunities of mere possibilities - but doing so with our feet planted firmly on the ground. Noelle Nelson reminds us, in a variety of ways, that we have far more resources than we think, and that, with openness and courage, we can be almost anything we want to be." (Jon Wilson, Publisher & Editor-in-Chief, Hope Magazine) "This book provides a splendid formula for your personal success and happiness. Written by a gifted and seasoned psychologist, it is a dynamite book. It can change your life! Read it again and again and dare to dream." (Joe Batten, Author of 19 books, including Tough-Minded Leadership, The Master Motivator, and Building a Total Quality Culture.) "A wonderful piece of work! Dr. Nelson's comprehensive approach emphasizes the importance of a future-oriented attitude and clearly demonstrates how to take a dream toward reality. I am often asked how to apply the idea of preferred future planning to an individual's life. Dr. Nelson's book will become a primary answer to that question." (Glen Hienstra, President, Host)

More About the Author

My mother named me "Noelle" because, being French, she wanted me to have a French name that couldn't be mispronounced in English. Didn't work. I've been called "No-No," "Noellie" "the First Noel" (among others), but my favorite is "Noilly" (think no-oil-ee). Poor woman, she meant well . . . Meanwhile, growing up in California with a French mom and a Cincinnati, Ohio, born-and-bred Dad was an adventure: European discipline, MidWest values and organic foods before anyone knew what organic was. My stylish Parisien mother would have loved fashion-plate children, instead she got my tomboy sister and a bookworm - me.

My not-very-straight-line path took me to Wellesley (briefly), UCLA (BA), the Sorbonne in Paris (Doctorat), United States International University (Ph.D.) with assorted jobs along the way: medical receptionist, department store salesgirl, 2nd stage manager at the Lido (Paris), actress (inevitable - I grew up in SoCal), acting coach, clinical psychologist (really), trial consultant, AUTHOR! Finally. The thing I love best to do. Well, along with giving seminars, speeches, creating videos . . . enough of that.

The one outstanding lesson life has taught me over and over, and that runs through all my writings in a variety of ways is that life, this life, and everything that is in it - you, me, the animals, the earth, our planet, the galaxy, God, all of it - is most present, most fulfilled when it is grandly, genuinely, thoroughly appreciated. Appreciation is the cornerstone of love, for only when you value something, cherish it, do you come to love it. And so it is that I write about what I discover anew every day - the greatest gift of all is appreciation.

Thank you for giving me yet another opportunity to appreciate. You.

5.0 out of 5 stars Being a WINNER is FUN!, January 26, 2000
By
K.C. (Sherman Oaks, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Winner Takes All (Paperback)
This is a great, easy-to-read book for anyone who wants more out of their life. WINNER TAKES ALL takes the mystery out of creating a satisfying and successful life and shows us that anyone and everyone can be a WINNER. Dr. Noelle teaches us the tools for examining our attitudes, using our imaginations, and creating our own personal dreams and goals that are truly harmonious with our individual desires, plus the tools for turning them into reality during these changing and often confusing times. You will learn to be a WINNER step-by-step as you join four very different people on their own journeys toward happiness. Also, you will be inspired by the "Winner's Circle" stories that Dr. Noelle has scattered throughout of exceptional people we all know and admire and how they came to achieve their success and happiness. This book would make a great gift, too, for anyone who wants to learn how to live their dreams.

4.0 out of 5 stars DON'T GIVE UP!, June 22, 2001

(REAL NAME)
For those who have been down-sized, transferred, re-located, dismissed or trained for a job which disappears because of corporate re-structuring, or those just eager to achieve success in their lives, this book seems to have been written just for you. The author exhorts us to create new foundations for our success, be willing to dream, and open to change. We're nudged to believe in a positive future, and are given stories of successful people to illustrate the author's eight steps to success. Like that familar song, Noelle Nelson seems to be saying, "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again!" If you enjoy this book, you'll be pleased and further fortified by Mary Carroll Moore's, "How To Master Change in Your Life". Both books are timely and practical.
