Book Description

What happens when a sheltered only child and a street-wise orphan are forced to work together in order to stay alive? Two strangers, Caleb and Jael, are thrown together under dire circumstances, joined at the hip, as their captor say. Their singlular focus? Survival.

A gripping story of courage, determination, sacrifice and survival. A pre-apocalyptic tale told in vivid terms by our hero, Caleb Wiseman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to put it down - until finished May 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Julia has a sure hand with dialogue - and with teenagers. I had no intention of reading past the sample - but I had no choice. After a few short pages I HAD to read the rest of it. Today.

You are right there, in Caleb's head, for the whole story - you forget it's a story. You think it's happening to you. The characters develop and mature and finish themselves right before your eyes. There are unexpected twists and turns - you will like them.

I don't want to put in any spoilers - but you will not be disappointed when you get to the end: you will know how and why. And especially who. Unreserved recommendation. I wish it had been longer.

Great story about two unlikely teens caught in an ugly web, with no way out. From the beginning, Julia Barrett brings the reader inside the heads of both central characters, Caleb and Jael, and the dilemma that forces them to question every move. Will the next step lead them to further danger or escape from the evil circle they find themselves in.? The author has the incredible ability of keeping us engaged, as we watch these two teens struggle with their emotions and their need to grow up fast. A well written and timely book, given the age we're living in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense May 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I did not expect to like this book. I received it as a gift and it is outside my normal genre preferences. Yet I couldn't stop reading it until I finished. The writing has a tight, almost understated, quality. The characters are believable and interesting. The story is gripping. Barrett does an excellent job of capturing the dynamics of the bizarre situation that Caleb finds himself in. Even the villains are more than caricatures, not an easy feat in a story like this one.

This story has a depth that transcends its genre without any of the pretense that I usually see in "serious" books. The subject matter is handled honestly, without salaciousness or overbearing pathos. The story feels real in a way that is hard to express. Read it and I think you will understand what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! May 23, 2014

This is a powerful heart-wrenching story. Although the main characters are teenagers, it has a lot of grownups heart breaks and experiences, so I’m not sure if the author intended it to be YA. As a general rule, I don’t read YA, but this story was so compelling, I took five hours from my, work in progress, to read and finish it. I became attached to Jael and Caleb the main characters in the story and I followed them to the end. Great read!

More About the Author

If one word describes me, it's eclectic. Or so my friends say. I'm a lover of books, poetry, art, history, baseball, barbecue, chocolate, coffee, children, animals and the great outdoors. I'm a hospice nurse as well as a writer, but I got my first job at the age of twelve so believe me when I tell you if my heroines are doing it, I've probably done it. At the heart of every one of my stories is a real life event. (Even in Captured!)

If I was pressed to brand my romances, I guess I'd say I write romance for the thinking woman. Or I try. I layer my stories with meaning - I have fun, yes, but I draw on my literary background and I love nothing more than to sprinkle a special pixie dust composed of one part mythos, one part symbolism. I'm quite fond of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung.

Family is everything to me. I keep my kids private, but my mom and dad and my poor husband are occasionally fair game! And I talk about my German shepherd, Jake, all the time.

I am also a hospice nurse and I write nonfiction-- articles for medical and nursing journals. I have a full-length work of nonfiction regarding my experiences with hospice: One Foot In Heaven, Journey of a Hospice Nurse.
