Biography

Bobby Darin was the US born crooner and folk rock singer who sang classic tunes including “Mack the Knife” and “Splish Splash”.

Darin was a gifted musician and was a multi-instrumentalist as a youth. Determined to pursue a career in music, he left college and became a night club singer. In 1956 his agent got him a contract with Decca, where he met, and began writing songs for, Connie Francis. After… Read more in Amazon's Bobby Darin Store

Editorial Reviews

When Atco had a surprise hit in 1964 with Bobby’s version of Edith Piaf’s 'Milord', they once again reached into the vaults for an album to follow up the single. This time, though, there was a complete album session from 1960 just sitting there begging to be released, a small jazz combo session that Bobby Scott had arranged. And, once again, the vaunted Darin versatility surfaces, for this is the jazziest album of his career, a mixture of uptempo and ballad numbers handled with equal aplomb by the legend. Includes 'Milord; Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea; Anything Goes; Do Nothin’ ’Til You Hear from Me; Golden Earrings; When Day Is Done; I Found a New Baby; What a Difference a Day Made; What Can I Say after I Say I’m Sorry; Hard Hearted Woman; Easy Living', and 'They All Laughed.'

4.0 out of 5 stars This is an ACTUAL review of Winners...NOT some comment about Darin, March 2, 2007

So far, there are only 2 reviews on this product...mine, and some guy from Chicago. He didn't actually REVIEW the product. He just talked about how he liked Darin's stage act, all the impressions he did in his show, and a "thank you" to Collector's Choice for releasing all of Darin's Atco albums... You get that?? ALL of his albums! He didn't even comment one iota on THIS album!!

Well, that's where i come in. I will ACTUALLY REVIEW THE PRODUCT.

I have mixed feelings about Winners. 10 of the 12 songs are great songs with Bobby Scott's small jazz combo...something Darin did VERY rarely. This is definitely Darin at his jazziest on record. He really can swing with that small group, and his voice blends in like an instrument in the band.

Here's the problem: There are 2 songs that were added upon the album's original LP release that were not part of these jazz sessions. They are two goofy singles they were trying to promote, and they're pretty bad (Milord & Golden Earrings). Since most albums back then (particularly ALL of Darin's) were recorded with 12 songs, it makes me wonder if they actually recorded 12 songs with Bobby Scott, then replaced 2 of them with these two awful singles. All the jazz tracks with Bobby Scott were recorded 2 years before the album's release, so it makes me feel there ARE 2 missing songs. If so, Collector's choice should have released those two missing songs as bonus tracks.

Due to having these two awful singles, and possible lack of the two missing songs, i give this album 4 stars.

My wife has been a Darin fan since the early 60's and she likes this CD and other Darin CD's , and as long she listens to what she wants, I can do what I want, which is fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars KUDOS, November 5, 2005

Thank you kindly Collectors Choice for re-issuing the marvelous Bobby Darin lps. We won't see the likes of Bobby D. again I fear. The range of his work, his talent as a writer, performer, actor, and just plain magnificent showman are sorely missed. I recall his night club act in which he played every instrument in the orchestra and then did an entire scene impersonating Clark Gable, Jack Benny, Marlon Brando, Cagney, Durante et. all. The material was absolutely funny and he was almost as good as the great, recently passed Frank Gorshin. Sorry kids, I don't think Eminem or Kwane West or the other dreck out there will be on stage 20 years from now. Darin did it all in 37 too short years! And yes, the recording is tremendous hi-fi stereo. We miss ya Bobby D.
