5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!!!, September 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Winner's Edge (Paperback)
This small paperback book has all the ingredients on how to be a success and win in the game of life than any book I've read. I refer to it often and you will too because nobody explains topics like self-esteem and self-image quite like Denis Waitley, who is one of the true heavyweights in the field of personal development.I couldn't recommend this great book highly enough!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good "Back to Basics" Book, March 12, 2010
By
This review is from: The Winner's Edge (Paperback)
Dr. Waitley's 1980 book still has relevance although some of his examples and speculations about the future hurt his credibility. Time has a way of sifting the valuable from the phoney. Like most material of this kind, discernment is needed to identify and retain the desirable, while chuckling at the specious.

In addition to this content issue, another weakness is the excessive emphasis on "self" in the book. God's involvement is blurred and various religious perspectives are thrown together in a nonsensical mix that distorts accuracy.

Having pointed out some flaws, let's look at some strengths. He makes a solid case for having a healthy self-concept. He writes, "the person with adequate self-esteem doesn't feel hostile toward others, isn't out to prove anything, can see the facts more clearly, and isn't demanding in his claims on other people" (p. 74).

Another helpful tidbit is found on page 85 when he notes, "individuals behave, not in accordance with reality, but with their perception of reality." Taken in context, Dr. Waitley has some valid points to make. Read it with discernment and you'll find the bright spots.
