Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2—When a baby dragon hauls himself in through Winnie the witch's cat's door, smoky chaos ensues, and the mistress of the house must use her magic to control the situation in some unusual ways. Winnie and Wilbur find the baby dragon's mother and settle down for the night—just about the time the sun comes up. One of the best parts of this story is the juxtaposition of the text and illustrations. While Winnie is presented in a fairly straightforward manner in the text, she is much funnier in the illustrations. Her wiry hair is flying, her nightie is rumpled, and her socks and shoes most definitely do not match. Paul uses atmospheric purples and grays in Winnie's mostly black house, and there are fun details all over, including creepy portraits and spider webs. This is a fun addition where the earlier books are popular.—Susan E. Murray, Glendale Public Library, AZ

Review

`Paul's artwork is as dynamic and arresting as ever. His comic touch is perfectly judged, stretching the simple story within reach of a wide age group.' The Guardian, Amazing Stories Supplement, October 2003 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Winnie the Witch and her cat, Wilbur, like to go to bed right at midnight. But one night, Wilbur hears a noise and goes to investigate. Waiting just outside the cat flap in the door is a baby dragon! Hijinks ensue when the dragon playfully chases Wilbur around the house and straight to Winnie. Watch out!

This is a delightful book for children who enjoy magical stories. The dragon and, later, its mother aren't scary, and Winnie and Wilbur are delightful. The illustrations are cute, if a tad dark at times.

My six-year-old with autism loved it. I loved it. And I can think of a lot of children I know who would love it, as well. This book is a great pick not just for Halloween, but for any time you feel like a magical tail!

A friend of mine in England, who is a school teacher, recommended the Winnie the Witch books for my grand-children. They love them - and I love reading them: simple stories that are pretty timeless. Everytime we read them together we find new things in the pictures that augment the story. We wave our make-believe magic wands together and shout ABRACADABRA in unison. (It's lots of funny listening to the 3 year old trying to get that ABRACADABRA out!)

This book is adorable! Winnie and her cat Wilbur have an adventure just after midnight when a baby dragon arrives at their house. My 3-year old has been running around for days saying "Abracadabra!" The illustrations are excellent, whimsical, and very rich, and it's as much fun for grown ups to read as for the little ones.
