Truly A Winning Combination,
By A Customer
This review is from: Winning Combinations (Audio CD)
If you are looking for a comprehensive overview of either Vesta's or Ce Ce Peniston's careers, this is not the way to go. Although the song choices are very good, A&M just did not cover enough ground on this CD. Luckily, for Ce Ce Peniston fans, a Best Of package was recently released. A&M has failed to give Vesta that same honor. While Vesta's career has been longer and far more successful than Ce Ce's, we have yet to see a Greatest Hits package from the singer. Which is really a shame. Vesta is one of the best vocalists in the music industry. All you have to do an take a listen to "Congratulations", "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Special" to see why Vesta's four A&M albums were so popular among R&B music fans. This CD is noteworthy because it contains a couple of long out of print songs from Vesta's 1986 self-titled debut CD. "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Sweet Thang" are some of the best songs she has recorded and it refreshing to see them finally available again on CD. You won't be dissappointed with this CD. There is some fabulous music contained here and for such a cheap price, you can't beat it!

no, no, no!,

Whoever put this "combination" together and thinks the meager 5 songs here are the best Vesta Williams ever made or that she and CeCe are in the same league, for that matter, is tripping. "Special" & "Sweet love" show her off to good effect but where's "don't you blow a good thing?" That's the song we fell in love to her by, not "Congratulations." That was for people who didn't know her and didn't know any better. that song was pitiful, self-piting Vesta pining over someone who married someone else, and was planning to wring her hands over him for "as long as I can breathe!" yeesh. We who knew her best want to hear knock-down-drag-out, big titty diva Vesta saying things like: you know what/you and that beeper need to go to the hospital/and if you don't stop ackin' stoopit/I'ma help you go ("Get outta my life"). I liked some of CeCe's songs too and they are both on this "collection." But that's because I liked what the producer did, not her a-tonal, bodiless vocals. If you'd ever heard "I'll be good to you," (w/Najee) or "Rain" (w/Norman Brown), you'd know why Vesta seems to have been the contemporary jazz and R&B guest vocalist of choice for a while(along with Chaka and Lalah Hathaway). An incredible combination would have been Vesta and another mind blowing but totally underappreciated vocalist that brings tears to my eyes to this day (am I'm so glad her current exploits are on youtube) Lisa Fischer! Now that would have been something to buy. So to recap, if I had to pick a mere 5 of Vesta's songs, they would be:
1)Don't you blow a good thing 2)Rain 3)Suddenly it's magic 4)I'll be good to you 5)Special So get these songs if you don't already have them, and make your own "winning combination."
