I appreciate the "Remember to take care of yourself" approach of this book. It's no surprise, since the author is a psychotherapist, that this is a large part of the book. And it's a welcome addition to all of the "just the facts" books out there. I enjoy this warmer and largely narrative approach. At the same time, the cold facts are what win your case, so I'd like to see more legal info. This book is a good part of your custody collection, but be sure to round it our with a more legal book. Two good tips from the author: Dress like a "good mom" in court -- leave the power suit at home and look soft and nurturing. Unfortunately, ambition can count against you. Also, be sure to document the father's visits with the children. Taking pictures with a date-stamp camera (Is that what it's called?) will show that you are in fact giving the dad the visitation he is entitled to. I definitely got my $13 worth.

Easy-to-understand (even if you're in a panic),

After reading about this book in Newsweek magazine, I bought a copy and found it extremely helpful. A custody battle is hard on everyone (including the father) and I found this book to be encouraging and hopeful. Ms. Hunter really "talked me down from the ledge" and I hope I can feel as positive as she did at the end of the road.

Deedra's book is a godsend. The included insight from her kids is very helpful. You can put yourself in her shoes with ease. Being a product of divorce myself, I could relate on so many levels. The book was just mentioned in NEWSWEEK magazine. Deedra is quoted in the article and explains that there is no real "winner" in these matters. I have recommended this book to many of my male friends going through a custoday battle. They have found it just as helpful as a woman. We all want what's best for our kids and Deedra's experiences really come to life and let us know that we are not alone.

Deedra's book is a must-have for women going through divorce. She has turned her negative personal experience to a most positive support book. Through her words of wisdom she empowers a mother to do the best for her children, which includes taking care of her own life and heart. I recommend it highly.

I've known Deedra Hunter for years and have found her insights to be practical in protecting kids during legal battles. She will come alongside to act as your 'custody coach' to help you out of the fog of a legal battle to move forward and rebuild your life.

This book has a lot of inspiration but not enough information. I need data not someone patting my hand saying "There, there, dear."

This was, by far, one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. The ramifications of this book have had far reaching effects on all aspects of my life. This is a must read for anyone going through a custody dispute. The author really knew what she was talking about.

I bought this book the day I was served with custody papers on my 14 year old daughter. I followed the recommendations to a T and everything went in my way (and what was best for my daughter).
I highly recommend this book to anyone in a custody dispute.

Easy Read- Informative- Encouraging,
This review is from: Winning Custody: A Woman's Guide to Retaining Custody of Her Children (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book to read for anyone going through a custody fight. Hunter writes from a very human perspective and aims to calm fears. While she may write less about the technical and legal aspects of a custody dispute and more about the emotional side and how to present yourself, you will find from experience in your own battle that this is precisely what you needed all along. There is nothing like a calm, collected, and forthright litigant. After reading this book, you will gain the insight and calm to carry you through your ordeal. The book is an easy read, read it twice, even if you don't feel the need. Hunter's writing style is easily digested. One thing that I found very helpful was the personal account from Hunter's children, she never forgot their side and bravely chose to allow them a voice in her book. Her children expressed themselves beautifully and offered a glimpse into what the true victims of our custody battles represent for them- she doesn't let us forget them. The book may be aimed at women but I think that it's an appropriate read for father's as well. It exposes what a mother goes through when threatened with the loss of her children and subsequently what the children also endure. It just might serve as food for thought and a warning to look before you leap. Great book for everyone.
