A Jumble of Nonsense Unsupported by Evidence: A rip off!, August 8, 2009
This review is from: Winning Is Easy: A Horseplayer's Guide To Picking 70% On The Board Selections (Paperback)
In these days of self-publishing it appears that any non-entity believes he can write a book. This hodge-podge of poorly edited notes would not have even made it past a regulars publishers slush pile in the old days. This 122 page book has 26 blank pages for "notes".
The rest of the large typeface, wide margined drivel is so badly laid out and poorly edited that it is almost unreadable. Imagine going to the track with a semi-literate dolt who tells you about how they "beat the track" with their methods, and this is a fair idea of what to expect as you read this book.
Well if Mr. Davies cannot write or order his thoughts is there any merit in the content? Since he supports nothing with any statistical evidence, it is impossible to say. His whole method seems to come down to a series of "angles" but no evidence that they have merit. He offers only unsupported opinions, and does not deliver the promise of the title.
For example on page 83 talking about class or "classification" as he puts it, he states:
"Most players would rather wager on a horse dropping in class, rather than a horse taking a small step up in class. This logic has always perplexed me. I personally have always subscribed to the theory that if a horse is "stepping up" the class ladder, he/she must be in good form." (I won't even comment on the appalling writing here)
Well let us examine the author's theory with some facts shall we?
In another racing book; a real one written by a real expert not a fake, 5,000 races were observed. 90.7% of the winners ran in a race of the same class or lower. The rest (9.3%) ran in a higher class.
So Mr. Davies's personal opinion is not worth a light.
I am not willing to reveal the source of the above statistic, because I would rather Mr. Davies and the idiots who attempt to follow his advice do their own work.
A book as bad as this could only be sold on Amazon. No bookstore would stock it for long because if you see it in real life you realize it only the jumbled notebook of a disorganized and idle mind. A rip-off of the first order.

New Ideas Worth Studying, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Winning Is Easy: A Horseplayer's Guide To Picking 70% On The Board Selections (Paperback)
"Winning is Easy" delivers some new ideas that make a lot of sense. In thoroughbred handicapping, if everyone is doing the same thing (i.e. Beyer Speed Numbers) they will be either betting at very low odds or missing winners that aren't reflected in classic handicapping menthods. The hedging recommendations are worth the price of the book by themselves.
