Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hart focuses on the role played by communication skills in children's development of self-esteem. She points out that faulty communication skills may lead to low self-esteem, then indicates what communication techniques increase self-esteem. She also examines the role of parents in increasing self-esteem: since most parents instinctively raise their children as they themselves were raised, they often repeat negative patterns that can enforce low self-esteem. Hart explains how to break away from such patterns. An inspiring book that can improve the quality of family life. Mary L. Kirk, Univ. of North Carolina , Wilmington, Lib.

More About the Author

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Louise was the third of five children born to hardworking German immigrant parents, and the first of her family to attend college. She taught elementary school for four years in East Detroit and Grosse Pointe Schools, and then devoted many years to raising her three children. Later she continued her education at the University of Northern Colorado, and received an Ed.D. in Community Psychology. While working as administrator of an inner city community school program for Denver Public Schools, she reworked her dissertation into an easy-to-read, uplifting book for parents, The Winning Family.

Eager to share her knowledge about the prevention of mental, social, and behavioral problems, and positive parenting, Dr. Hart delivered over four hundred presentations at conferences, hospitals, and for parent groups nationwide for more than twenty years. She was hired by the U.S. Army Family Advocacy Program to help prevent domestic violence; the locations were as diverse as West Point, Pearl Harbor, and the National Security Agency, and as far as Heidelberg, Tokyo, and Okinawa. During that time, she wrote her second book, On the Wings of Self-Esteem.

Two remarkable highlights of her career include speaking at the Second Annual Self-Esteem Conference of Russia, and keynoting at a conference in Phoenix, Arizona, titled "The Winning Family Conference."

On a personal note, Louise is an adventurous woman. She lived in Guatemala with the Peace Corps. She biked in Europe with her teenagers, and hiked the Milford Track in New Zealand. Her greatest triumph occurred in Nepal where she reached the top of Kala Patar (18,200') just 10,000 feet below the top of Mount Everest.

When Louise's first grandchild was born, she moved 1500 miles from Boulder, Colorado to Oakland, California, to be near (now) three young grandchildren. She has diversified her career by becoming a publisher. She created Uplift Press to re-issue two international bestselling children's books, Liking Myself, and The Mouse, the Monster and Me, written by Dr. Pat Palmer. Louise continues to write and give presentations on positive parenting to parents in the Bay Area.
