Book Description

January 1986 0961003626 978-0961003623
As employers face increasing global competition, they are not only adopting new technology and management styles, they're also looking for workers with compatible personality and mental characteristics. It's no longer simply what can you do that counts; it's also how well do you fit in with the culture of the company and its goals. In the chapters, What Do Employers Want? and Organizational Style, new hiring criteria are described in detail (i.e., ability to work in teams, willingness to learn new tasks, ability to adapt to rapid changes in procedures and technology, creativity).

The chapter, Ways to Boost Your Self-Confidence, describes cognitive self-therapy techniques which really work. Twelve pages of interview questions provide additional moral support. Another chapter helps the job applicant bring into focus his/her strengths and weaknesses before facing the firing line of interviewer questions.

Other features of the book include tips on verbal and non-verbal communication which, psychological studies show, can influence the outcome of the interview. There are sections on special problems confronting women and older job hunters. In keeping with the spirit of the title, many humorous illustrations and quotations help the job hunter realize that, after all, a single interview is not a life-or-death situation but just one move in a game where practicing the right strategies can eventually lead to a win!

Editorial Reviews

Review

". . . goes beyond (other books) not only because of its relevance to today's business environment but also because of the detail with which it covers its subjects." -- The Small Press Book Review, Jan/Feb 1987

"Detailed, excellent advice on all aspects." -- Nassau County Library System, 2/28/86

"Many excellent books on job hunting can be found, but 'Winning. . . ' is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive. Not only is the material concise and well organized, but it includes a great deal of new information not generally found in other books of this type.. . . The chapter on organizational style introduces several new concepts: companies have "personality" and sets of values and beliefs and the style generally reflects type personality of the founder or current leader.. . . "old wave" or traditional organizations tend to be conservative, bureaucratic .and are usually found in finance, government and public education. These firms have strong leadership, clear lines of authority, strict dress code and are less open to change and innovation. They hire people who have (similar) personality traits." The "new wave" companies generally make decisions by consensus among employees, . . There is no dress code, and creativity and innovation flourish. . . . it is not only essential that an employee have a personality that is compatible with the job he is performing, but he must also possess traits common to other members of the place where he is employed...." -- Plano Texas Daily Star Courier, September 17, 1986

"This clearly written volume is loaded with valuable information . . . . Useful, detailed chapters focus on proper attire, improved self-confidence, fielding potentially embarrassing questions, and anticipation of an interviewer's queries. Perhaps most important, Danna reveals how high-tech employers favorably view certain employee traits that more traditional firms may shun, for example, high-tech firms may have more tolerance for casual dressers and may seek people more adaptable to change. Related material covers targeting a resume, tips for women returning to the work force after a long absence, and advice for persons changing professions. Well recommended for general readers." -- Booklist, The American Library Association, January 15, 1986
