I can absolutely attribute my success at landing a job after being out of work for quite a while to reading this book. 1.0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
This book was not very helpful. The title gives the impression that it really focuses in on interviewing but it attempts cover every other aspect of job hunting. The author is more interested in trying to write with humor than really give good examples and info. I'm reading "48 Days to the Work You Love" right now and it is far better and I've yet to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money well spent !!!, June 16, 2006
By
Steve "Steve" (Keflavik, Iceland) - See all my reviews
This book was definitely money well spent. I have interviewed and accepted jobs previously in my career (10yrs in my profession), but have never been as prepared as I was after reading this book. I used it from the start of the job hunt process to accepting the best overall offer. Reading the book helped ease pre-interview anxiety, and also helped me prepare for interviews by providing a good idea of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to answer difficult questions, etc. The sections I found most helpful were on generating multiple offers, and negotiating after the initial offer. I used Dr Powers advice on both, and was able to generate multiple offers and negotiate significantly higher salary and vacation time. Well worth the money and I would recommend this book to anyone currently on the job hunt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eliminate "the fever," ace the interview & get the job, January 30, 2006
I've been on both sides of the job interview process: as someone doing the hiring and also as a candidate for a job. It is amazing how being on the job hunt alters your view of the interview process. Did I develop some kind of "interview fever" which made me overly nervous and forget what it was like to hire someone? Maybe. But reading Winning Job Interviews allowed me to step back and put it all back into proper perspective so I could ace the interview and get the job. How cool is that?

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must-Read!" for all GI's getting out of the service., May 31, 2005
I'm getting ready to retire from a successful military career. To be honest, before reading Dr. Power's book-the thought of joining the rat-race of the whole job interview process was more formidable than facing another deployment to the desert! At 40 years old I haven't had to go on a job interview in over 20 years! This book was not only fun to read, but offered great tips, warned against common pit falls (I was sure to fall into) and helped me plan out my strategy to attain my future career. It's hard to imagine, but after reading this candid, well-written book I feel not only self-confident but actually excited about my upcoming interviews!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that provides the inside "scoop"..., March 8, 2005
Written with a touch of humor and satire this is a trully different job interview book. The inner secrets of "winning" in an interview situation are generously shared. The book is upbeat and motivational and brimming with insighful ideas. Even someone who has been through the interview experience several times will find in Dr. Powers book fresh new insights.
Basically, Winning Job Interviews provides step-by-step guidance on how to prepare for the best interview in your life.
I highly recommend this book to young people who are graduating from college and entering the workforce...its easy-to-read and gives the "scoop" on how to make a believer of the person on the other side of the desk.
The only interview book you'll need to buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a pretty good book., March 28, 2009

I think this book is pretty good. It helped me prepare for 3 interviews, and I landed three job offers in these tough economic times. This book helped stimulate my mind to prepare for answering various interview questions. Also it has a useful chapter for going through the salary negiotations that my wife used to negotiate an additional 3% increase in salary.

5.0 out of 5 stars All I have to say is...."WOW!!", October 5, 2008

Within the last few minutes, I finished reading this extraordinary book. I am currently employed and trying to upgrade myself so at first I didnt think the first part of the book i.e. job hunting would interest me much. Boy was I wrong! This book is so comprehensive and entertaining, I couldnt put it down. The sequence of the book could not be laid out any better. Upon completion of the book I already feel armed with a new sense of knowledge and empowerment about the whole interviewing and job changing process, that I am acutually quite anxious to start practicing. Even for someone brand new to the job hunting and interviewing process, this book is worth it's weight in gold. I honestly didnt know how much I didnt know about this thing called interviewing until now. And the worst part is I have conducted many interviews. Hows that for an oximoron. The section in the back of the book has several different tools for the reader and future interviewee to use as preparation for success. Its as if all a person has to do is connect the dots and the doors of knowledge will fling open. I will be wearing the pages of this book out over the next several days as I personally have what I consider one of the biggest interviews of my life coming up. And trust me I am already planning on how to make this one a great one. I will be updating this review as I practice and learn more. Which brings up another amazing point about this book. It provides the reader with a scope of reading that you can refer back to again and again. Anyone looking for a great interview/job hunting resource book. This is absolutely the one to get. Happy reading.

This review is from: Winning Job Interviews (Paperback)
Dr. Paul Powers provides some wonderfully useful and supportive information for taking control of the interview process and using it to not only gain a job, but to also build confidence in working through the job search process. Topics include everything from getting into a good interviewing mindset, customizing your job hunt, and practicing interviewing, to answering interview questions, selling your skills, negotiating offers, and following up with potential employers and referrals. Particularly insightful and helpful are Powers' information and tips on psychological testing, and his tools and techniques for prepping references. If you read nothing else, read these two sections. The information alone is good, the techniques make the book even better. Powers also provides an Interview Tool Kit at the back of the book that will be of help to even a seasoned job hunter. I successfully use variations of several of the interview tools with my clients and recommend other job searchers and career development professionals use them as well. ©2009 [...]

For anyone who has resisted buying books on this topic for fear of a "dry", uncreative read, think again! Dr. Powers shares honest, direct and useful advice infused with humor. The reader comes away with concrete advice and direction -- I highly recommend this book to not only the newer professional but also those who may have been out of the job market/interviewing scene for a while.
