Book Description

Winning Love by Abby Niles

Mac “The Snake” Hannon has spent years throwing himself into cage fighting as a way to lash back at the natural disaster that destroyed his future. A call for help has Mac returning to the one place he swore never to return: Kansas—in the height of tornado season.

There he meets free-spirited Gayle Matthews. At first he wants nothing to do with the infuriatingly persistent woman, but the crazy challenges she tosses his way are impossible to resist. As she thaws years of bitterness, bringing back the Mac he believed long gone, he starts to make peace with the past and see the future again. Until he learns she chases his worst nightmare—then he can’t get away fast enough.

Meteorologist and storm chaser, Gayle Matthews is no stranger to being left behind and now believes in living in the moment. She wants to do just that with the handsome extreme fighter with the achingly sad eyes. As she works to replace the sorrow with desire, she finds herself breaking her one rule: have fun but don’t fall in love. When he suddenly pushes her away and she discovers the horrifying reason why, she issues one more challenge: face his fear and come on a chase with her.

Will squaring off with the past lead to a victory for heartache or love?

3.0 out of 5 stars solid characters August 26, 2014
By Faith
Format:Kindle Edition
Copy courtesy of Netgalley - 3.5 stars
The story captured my attention from the start. Gayle is a confident, sassy woman. She was fun at first. She is attracted to Mac from the beginning and is not afraid to show it. She is a storm chaser. While that is something that requires bravery and controlled fear; there are other things that Gayle fear.Mac is a MMA fighter that is fighting his own personal demons. The MMA is not a big part of the story. It focuses more on Mac's fears and insecurities. I enjoyed both characters a lot. In the beginning when Gayle was trying to loosen up Mac, was my favorite part. Their interactions at times were comical. I look forward to reading more in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Boring read September 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I became bored with this book quickly. it's bad when you read a book hoping it will end soon. While there were some good parts in the beginning, as the story unfolded I was wanting some excitement! Dramatic things happened in the book but, I felt nothing. The writing was just flat, left me emotionless.

I wanted the sex scenes hotter. I wanted more some alpha MMA. And I didn't like that she wouldn't comprise when it came to their relationship. It was what she wanted and he had to expect that. Her way or a flight back to ATL.

The "trust" part of the book made no sense. His fears are left up to mother nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! September 7, 2014

I loved Mac and Gayle's story! They both have been through so much tragedy in their lives and they didn't know they needed each other to overcome that tragedy. Mac lived with fear, regret, and self loathing while Gayle chose not face her past and pretend that she didn't have the same fears as Mac. Together they faced their fears and demons of the past and they weathered the storm together. Read it and see for yourselves, Abby Niles doesn't disappoint!

4.0 out of 5 stars An intense read! September 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Wow – what an intense read. I really enjoyed Mac and Gayle’s story and just loved watching Gayle help Mac begin to heal from the losses he has suffered. I just love a damaged hero, and when you throw in a heroine that is every bit as damaged as the hero but has chosen an entirely different path to help cope with her losses, you have a recipe for some fun interactions, lots of playful banter, and some serious emotional outbursts that go straight to your heart.

It was so much fun watching Gayle’s antics throughout the book. From her constant challenges to Mac that she used as a way to get him to do things he normally wouldn't do – like play Twister or attend a Zumba class – to her ability to know just when to push and when to pull back as she navigates the battlefield that is Mac’s heart, Gayle constantly had me laughing and admiring her ability to give Mac just what he needed, just when he needed it. Mac could be so infuriating at times, but once he finally gives in and acknowledges his attraction to Gayle and commits to taking things further with her, you could see just what a sweet, caring man he was.

In my opinion, Ms. Niles does a wonderful job describing the tornado activity in the book, and was able to communicate the emotional trauma that can happen when something like a tornado rips your whole world away from you– whether you are there to witness it first hand, or have to carry on and survive when everyone you love has been taken from you. Having never gone through anything like this, for me it really worked, and it just reinforced the fact that there are so many things that we don’t control – Mother Nature being one of them.

I haven’t read the previous two books in this series, but didn't feel that I needed to in order to enjoy this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hot Cage Fighter! September 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition

I was given a copy of this book to write an honest review for Netgalley and Cocktails and Books.

Mac Hannon “The Snake” is a successful cage fighter, but unfortunately, he’s been hiding from life since losing his wife, when an unexpected tornado tore through their town. Four years later, Mac reluctantly agrees to return to Kansas, where he and his wife once lived, to help a friend prepare for a fight. That’s where Mac meets Gayle, his friend’s next door neighbor. Gayle instantly puts Mac on edge, because while he’s attracted to her, his reaction to her makes him feel uncomfortable. Since his wife’s death he prefers his solitude and has no interest in dating. Gayle is a confident and assertive woman who goes after what she wants. She never makes Mac wonder what she’s thinking, because she says whatever is on her mind and Mac finds her refreshing and sexy, but also a little scary. Gayle has a doctorate in meteorology, she’s a lot of fun, unpredictable and keeps coming on to Mac. I found it easy to like Mac and his vulnerability touched me. He’s strong and imposing, yet embarrassed when Gayle gives him a compliment and he isn’t sure how to deal with all her blatant sexual remarks.
I have to admit I was surprised by this book, because the cover features a fighter and although Mac is a fighter, he doesn’t spend much time fighting. This is a story about two people coming to grips with their demons from the past. Mac and Gayle are two troubled and scarred people who have tried to move on from their painful pasts and continue to live their lives, but are having a difficult time. They each deal with their tragedy in their own individual way. So although I enjoyed the story, it wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but I have to say, when Mac and Gayle do get together, they are sexually explosive. This is the third book in the series, but each one is a stand-alone.

More About the Author

Ever since Abby Niles picked up her first Sweet Valley High book in sixth grade and fell in love with Elizabeth and Todd, she's been hooked on romance. By the time she reached high school, she was devouring meatier romances with pirates, cowboys and knights. She never imagined that those years of reading would one day lead to her becoming a published author.

In her late twenties, after having twins and becoming a stay-at-home mom, she started doodling stories to keep her sanity. Next thing she knew, she was actually submitting to publishing houses. And was immediately rejected. That didn't stop her though. She found some kickass critique partners, honed her craft, and continued submitting.

And eventually sold.

Today, she juggles work, being a single mom, and writing. It's not always easy, but hey, who said life was easy?

Abby is the author of the contemporary MMA romance, Extreme Love, the first book in her Love to the Extreme series. Fighting Love is scheduled to release in December of 2013 and Winning Love is scheduled for 2014. She is also the author of the dark paranormal romance series The Awakening: Aidan and the The Awakening: Liam. The Awakening: Britton is scheduled to release in November 2013. Both series are with Entangled Publishing. She also has a geeky romantic comedy, Defying Convention, with Carina Press.

She is represented by Maureen Walters at Curtis Brown, LTD.
