5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game!
First of all, the stones DO fit into the tube without a problem - you have only to roll the sacks up with the board instead of trying to fit them all on top afterward. I can't compare the board to the 'classic' version, but I find this one durable and convenient.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst item I have ever ordered on Amazon, November 16, 2006
This review is from: Deluxe Pente (Toy)
I ordered this item excited to relive some childhood memories of the game and was very disappointed.

What I was hoping would be a reproduction of the original was instead an ugly, overpriced mousepad! The print quality on the board is a joke. Very blurry and an ugly blue instead of the nice cream color of the original.. And instead of a thin piece of leather-like material like the original, the board is the same thickness of a mousepad with the thick rubber backing and everything. Ok, No big deal, right? Wrong!

Imagine how disappointed I was when I rolled up the board to discover the board and the stones do not fit into the tube! No wonder they ship it outside the tube in the box! The glass stones are much like the original, but very light in color -- this was about the only good thing going for the set so for that I'll give it 1 star.

I sent this item back immediately upon receipt and would encourage anyone else interested in PENTE to find an original set and not buy this joke of a reproduction.

Pente has become an instant favorite, and as a game designer myself, I greatly respect its elegance. If you've never played this game, TRY IT! The rules are incredibly simple yet the game-play is surprisingly rich and deep (much more than checkers but less than chess).

I am one of the ones who bought and loved this game in the 70's. Somewhere along the way my children lost the original mat to my set and we have been using our go mat instead (also a 19 x1 19 grid). Having a nostalgia for the original mat, and wanting to put my go mat back with those stones, I ordered this set. I was some disappointed that this Pente set came with only 4 sets of stones instead of my original 6 sets, but it's been a while since I've played with 6 people... The real problem to this set is that the round storage tube is not wide enough to actually hold the rolled-up mat, and the 4 sacks of playing pieces. It's a problem fixable by buying a larger mailing tube at Staples, but it seems a stupid problem to have to fix for a new game. The game itself is great. I still play it, my children play it, and sometimes we introduce new friends to the game too. The instructions with this set are an improvement over what came with my 1970's set.

I love the "board," I love the stones and their little bags. I'm wondering though why I bought the four-person version because I can't see playing it with more than one person.

I bought this as a gift for my husband. He loved it, and he and his family (avid pente-players) really liked the look of the board. It is a really nice set, easy to put away as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic game, classic look, new features, mediocre quality, January 12, 2007
This review is from: Deluxe Pente (Toy)
This is a great game for all ages. I have always been a big fan of Pente; it all started when my big brother pulled out his Pente tube (curiosity), removed and unrolled the board (interest), and then dumped out all those pretty stones which glittered all over the floor (awe!).

This version of Pente from Winning Moves isn't any different from the old version, except that you get two new bags of stones, each bag of stones are still as pretty as before. The stone colors are Black, Blue, Gold, and Green. My only complaint is the quality. The tube, the board, and the bags aren't tough enough to handle the ferocity or frequency I generally inflict apon them. However, the quality isn't too bad. After a few months of much use, the tube has had the bottom end come off, and the board has had the corners start to de-lam.

Quality issues asside, I would say this is the best version of Pente I've seen in a long time. It has completely paid for it self already in the few months I have owned it, in the time I have spent joyously crushing others in compentitions! ;)

I love this game. The board is high quality and soft, thicker than I expected. The glass beads are plentiful, and most are good. A few were doubled or chipped. My college roommate had an older version of this game, which was better. This game board is a little too thick (or the cylinder too thin), making it impossible to put the bead bags back into the cylinder once the board is in. The only way to put the game away is to tightly wrap the game board around the 4 bead bags first, then you can slip the whole thing into the cylinder. Its a only minor issue, but I would prefer a wider cyclinder with some wiggle room. Other than that, the game is great.

I was introduced to Pente about a month ago when a friend brought it over. We played 30 games in a single weekend. It is like playing tic tac toe on steroids. My friend's game did have that misprint sort of slight blurry quality to it. But mine was fine. I suggest buying it a game store if you can find it just to make sure you get a clear printed mat. However I did buy one at a store and one on Amazon and it was great. THE GAME IS self-contained which other reviews would have you believe it is not. You need to roll up your four bags of stones side by side before rolling up the mat and placing it in its container. Simple as that. It does use a mouse pad like material for a mat, but I have no problem with that. It is durable and can be rolled up. I have played this game with my 80 year old grandfather, numerous friends and a few 10 year-olds (I would not suggest playing it with those younger than that).

This is a super fun game. Good for logic and strategy stretching educationally. It makes my 7 year-old happy at the same time it makes my husband and his friends happy when we all play together- you gotta love games like that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great family game, February 11, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Deluxe Pente (Toy)
My husband had seen this game a few years ago and thought it would be fun to play with our children. He loves this version as it is not too big or small and easily portable. This is the first game anyone played on Christmas morning, he taught our 9 year old to play and she kept asking to play again! The point of the game is to get 5 of your pieces in a row. If an opponent surrounds your pieces they are captured, so it's not as easy as it sounds - but still not difficult. I don't play chess, but I imagine this game could take quite awhile if you have a talented opponent, just like a challenging game of chess. It is a good way to teach planning ahead/strategy. The problem we had was trying to get the 4 year old to stop walking away with the pretty colored game pieces.
