This review is from: Rubik's Cube 4x4 (Toy)
I bought the cube, and it was in ruins a week later. One of the center pieces broke off, and it's irreparable. I saw it coming, though, because the cube started showing signs of flakiness by the second day: some of the stickers (mostly the orange ones) had begun peeling off, and the pieces were getting very loose, very fast. The cube burst side pieces out on two occasions before its final destruction.
I was being as gentle as possible, but if you learn how to solve the cube, then you'll be performing thousands of turns on it. Both the 3x3 and the 5x5 cubes seem to hold up a lot better than the 4x4. I'm hoping I can find another manufacturer. I've played with 3x3 cubes from many manufacturers over the years, and some are obviously better-made and more durable than others. This isn't one of the good ones. If you're going to make serious attempts at solving your 4x4, I recommend lubricating it with something. The cube-solving sites seem to recommend silicone spray (whatever that is). When I was in high school I'd take them apart and put vaseline in them, which smooths over the "catches" that happen as you turn rows that are slightly misaligned, and also has a slightly glue-y effect that holds it together better.

Big disappointment!,

I used to love playing with the 3x3 Rubik's cube as a kid and decided to get it for my son for Christmas. I mistakenly ordered the 4x4, but decided it didn't matter - still the same kind of fun and challenge. The day it was opened, the stickers started to come off and when I tried to use it, within the first 30 seconds, four pieces came off, one of which broke and can't be fixed! I just went online to order the 3x3, but are finding similar reviews about stickers, etc. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!

Same experience - fragile (okay), stickers peel off with use (not okay),

I bought the cube, and it was in ruins a week later due to the fact that the cube started showing signs of flakiness by the second day: some of the stickers (mostly the white and blue ones) had begun peeling off. This is beyond belief because this toy should have been designed / built with the durability to withstand some handling; the statement "if you learn how to solve the cube, then you'll be performing thousands of turns on it" is spot-on.

If you've defeated the rubik's cube (3x3x3) then this is the next logical step. Not too much harder than the 3x3x3, but more fun! Only problem is the stickers wear off easy, but you can purchase replacements from the rubiks website.

An expansion on the 3x3x3 cube, this is a whole different dynamic in solving algorithms. just because you can do three doesn't mean you can do this! But, once you figure out your meathod it isn't super hard. You really need to know how to solve a 3x3x3 before you attempt this, however. Definately, if you like puzzles, pick this up.

I love the original 3x3 Rubik's cube and I play with it all of the time. All of my friends had this 4x4 and it looked really fun. So I bought this 4x4 Rubik's cube and waited many days for it in the mail. Then I got the package, opened it up, started playing with it, and then 3 pieces snapped out and fell on the floor. One of those pieces was a center piece that can't be put back on. I wasn't even spinning the cube that hard, and it just broke. So right now I wasted 20 bucks on a broken piece of junk cube.

A pretty fun cube this is. I disagree with some people, and think it is harder than the original cube. If you don't like the 3x3x3, you probably won't like this one. So far, mine has held up well. I haven't noticed any problems, and haven't snapped it to pieces yet. As long as you don't speed cube or make wild, reckless twists, it should hold up as good as the original cube. Overall, it's a really good puzzle. Fun to just mess around with, and can be used as a stress reliever..or stress inducer. Buy it if you want it! That is all.

I love rubik's cube I myself can solve a regular rubik's cube but not the big one the problem though is the stickers they peel off about the second day that you use it they need to go back to the way they did it in the eighty's paint that way I don'y have to buy a new one every time a sticker falls off

Reassembly May Be necessary,

This puzzle (also known as Rubik's Revenge) is good fun - and because it has another layer of movement, it is much more likely to fall apart than the 3x3x3 cube. However, the puzzle of reassembly is also quite fun - and requires no force! A clue to reassembly - make sure that the last two pieces are the same colour edge pieces - and they will (very gently) snap into place. A second clue: only the centre pieces (four flats pieces on each side) fit into the grooves of the ball - be gentle, and your cube will be as good as new. Start with the four centre pieces of one colour at the bottom - and build up the cube layer by layer. Remember! No force!

I received a Rubik's Brand 4x4 cube for Christmas this year. I can solve the 3x3 in about a minute and a half each time, I was looking for something harder and this new cube fits the bill perfectly. Up to a point, it is not like a 3x3, and is entirely intuitive. However, you can eventually turn it into a scrambled 3x3, and you solve it the same from that point on. Except for parity. Parity is a situation that can occur on a 4x4 but is not possible on a 3x3, and it requires at least two huge, horrible, difficult, chalenging, and crazy algorithms that you must memorize. But, it is very fun to solve and I recomend every Rubix enthusiast to get one. Now, about the quality of this particular cube. My problem is with the stickers. The internal mechanism, a sphere, is fine. The physical construction of this thing is great. It moves well, and is very sturdy. But the stickers are not durable. Within three days, they began to peel. I then decided to take a risk, and customize it. I took it apart, and painted each piece individually with epoxy, then I scraped the excess epoxy off the insides of each individual piece once it dried. I then lubed it with WD40 and Vaseline, while putting it back together. The result, a professional looking and moving cube. It took a lot of time, but I think it was worth it. However, that amount of work would not be necessary if Rubik's were to spend about 5 cents more on each cube and get better stickers. The quality of the stickers deduct two stars from this otherwise five star cube. I would recomend that you look at other brands for you 4x4, like Eastsheen, or maybe a tiled cube. Or, you could purchase better stickers for about a dollar and put them on yourself as soon as you get this cube. Or you could turn it into a frankencube as I have done with mine. But except for the poor stickers, this is a great cube, very chalenging and fun, and anyone will enjoy it. |
