The construction on this is very disappointing ... The stickers are irregular and lumpy. Whats the point of an attractive neutral-color cube if its made like crap? Is a little workmanship too much to ask for nowadays?

This cube could have been pretty cool, but it's not. There are 6 sides to a Rubik's cube, so making 6 shades of gray is easy. In percentage of black, it would be as follows: 0% (white), 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% (black). Instead, what they used were: 0% (white) 40%, 50%, 60%, 100% (black) and silver. I have no idea why. It makes the gray sides difficult to distinquish, which does not make it more challenging to solve... just irritating.

A new look for a classic puzzle,

I bought this cube and found it to be quite smooth in turning. I have no problem with the colors (there's a black side and two dark gray sides that are similar). They are hard to differentiate if the lighting is dim, but otherwise I found no problem. Some people said they had problems with the stickers but I have not found that to be the case.
I think the color difference makes this cube a little more challenging, if for no other reason that I'm not used to it the same as I am with my original. If you like the classic cube, I definitely recommend this.

Get a full color cube instead. The one I got is really tight, even after lubricating, and these gray colors besides don't being beautiful are dificult to differentiate. Don't waste your money on this.

I collect all sorts of puzzle cubes (and other shapes) and enjoy solving them for fun. I'm nowhere near competition speeds, but I'm pretty good. I was in the store looking for a new 4x4x4 and I saw this cube! I was very excited :D It provides a new challenge, or maybe a twist on the old challenge, because the colors are very similar to each other. I feel like this cube will make me better at being able to see steps quicker and therefore making my time with the regular cube that much better.
ALSO! This cube looks damn neat. Totally awesome. Maybe not worth $23 on amazon...but honestly, if I saw it on here before I saw it in the store, I'd probably get it for $23 :)

Well, I should have read all the other reviews before I wasted the money.
Seriously, this is the most disappointing cube I have ever bought (and I own about 35 or 40 cubes). It's basically like buying one off the shelf from Wal-Mart that is way too tight. You can lubricate it, which of course I did, but you can't adjust the springs, so it's stuck the way it is. The real disappointment, however, is just the fact that it's just a bunch of grey stickers. That's it! One side is chrome, so that's cool, and one side is white, which is expected and is fine. And there's a black side, which looks kinda cool and is different for Rubik's. But then the other three are grey and they can only be distinguished from each other in really good light. They are waaaaaay to similar to make this a good cube. It could be a much cooler product, but it's just not. It's a poor excuse of a Rubik's cube with a fancy new name. Iconic? Hardly.

It is true as said above. Sometimes the shades of grey become too similar in your mind. But I think the purpose of this toy was to be more of a display piece for aesthetics rather than a functional world record breaking tool.

The 'almost' identical shades does make for a few OOPS, but that's the more fun for it. I had a LOT of looks when I pulled it out in my travels, and lots of ppl were asking for one, since they're used to the 6-colored one. Recommended to add to collections and for the "show-off" factor.

I'm not sure why more people don't like the Rubik's ICON cube. I get that the colors are harder to differentiate. This is a BONUS for me. Since it's harder to differentiate it allowed me to work on speed solving and has helped lower my times on a full color cube.
It is constructed well. Not too tight, not too loose. Mine didn't even need lubrication. The stickers have stayed on relatively well. I see some corners coming up now, but that's only because I've used the cube so much.

Although the stickers do wear off and the cube is relatively stiff to start with, it breaks in after some rough training. It can still be solved with considerable speed, although its weak point is in cutting corners.Unfortunately, the durability of the stickers does need some addressing. Many of the stickers have begun to wear off already, although that has been in part because I have abused the icon to a considerable degree and practice speed solving it rigorously. This should not be too huge of a complain, however, because such things are to be expected, and relative to a regular Rubik's cube it should not be too discouraged. If you're willing to buy replacement stickers from Cubesmith.com, this should not be too much of a problem. My opinion on the difficulty should not be taken too seriously, because grayscale art is something that I tend to specialize in and I am fluent in over ten different dialects of gray. It is my belief that anyone reading this review already knows whether a grayscale cube interests them or not and has an idea of how hard it is. |
