4.0 out of 5 stars Great Coaching Tool
Winning Rugby is a fantastic Rugby coaching tool, however, there are a couple of areas that are a bit unclear. Fortunately, once the drills in question have been "walked through" by the reader, the point of the drill usually becomes clear enough that even a new coach can use it successfully.

2.0 out of 5 stars simple drills for a starting club or coach
The book was well organized and the descriptions were adequate, but I found the drills much too simplistic for a skilled team or coach. Some of the drills seem to emphasize bad habits, such as running at your opponent, rather than running...

Winning Rugby is a fantastic Rugby coaching tool, however, there are a couple of areas that are a bit unclear. Fortunately, once the drills in question have been "walked through" by the reader, the point of the drill usually becomes clear enough that even a new coach can use it successfully.

I have been coaching for less than one year, and this is the main resource I've used for our training. The players really liked the drills we ran from these pages.

The author is obviously knowledgeable about the sport, and he writes his book without being condescending. Something I found to be quite refreshing. Mr. Quistberg seems to understand that the reader actually wants to learn something, and he makes it easy. Each drill comes with a drawing detailing the expected actions of the players, as well as commentary concerning the expected result of the drill.

All in all, if I were to recommend only one resource for a new rugby coach, this would be it.

Most of the drills are designed to maximize a certain aspect of play, passing for example, but don't often relate to game scenarios. Some of the drills seem to emphasize bad habits, such as running at your opponent, rather than running toward space. I would not recommend this book to a serious player or coach.
