5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Women's History - Great Photos, July 9, 2010
This review is from: Winning Ways: A Photohistory of Women in Sports (Paperback)
If you are interested in girls and women in sports, get this book. I'm sorry to see it's out of print but check your library. It is a wonderful history of girls and women in sports in the U.S., including early female basketball players and women who played tennis in long skirts. Look at the photo sequence of a woman in the 1970s who signed up with her initials to run the Boston Marathon--which was only open to men. You'll see an official in a suit running after her trying to tear off her marathon number. What were they so afraid of? You'll learn about that sort of bias against women but also about amazing women who went ahead anyway and pursued their sport. Winning Ways is entertaining and informative, a terrific read.
