Improve your critical thinking skills with 148 realistic case studies from all four clinical practice areas: medical-surgical, pediatrics, maternity, and psychiatric nursing. Each case in Critical Thinking Cases in Nursing, 4th Edition covers a common problem, drawn from actual clinical experiences and written by nurses who are clinical experts. All cases have been thoroughly updated and revised to include current clinical practices, with integrated content on pharmacology, nutrition, and diagnostic/lab tests to encourage you to think critically about all aspects of care. This fourth edition also features highlighted prioritization content to help you prepare for success on the NCLEX® examination and provide quality patient care.
  • Uses a comprehensive case study approach drawn from actual clinical experiences, helping you learn to think critically, prioritize, and deliver proactive nursing care.
  • Each case study reinforces a critical thinking approach to patient care by helping you identify changes, anticipate possible complications, and initiate therapeutic interventions.
  • Questions for each case study are rated according to their level of complexity - knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, and synthesis.
  • Cases increase in complexity throughout each chapter so that you can steadily increase your knowledge.
  • Includes separate chapters on important topics such as alternative therapies, multiple system disorders, and emergency situations.
  • Logical, body system organization of medical-surgical cases makes it easier to use with numerous medical-surgical nursing textbooks and courses.
  • Presents more clinical case studies than any other resource - 148 in all - covering all four clinical nursing settings.
  • Groups cases so you can find relevant information easily: Medical-Surgical; Pediatric, Maternity, and Psychiatric; and Other/Advanced Cases.
  • Includes new cases on pediatric and maternity patients.
  • Provides a new emphasis on prioritization in the clinical setting, highlighted with an easy-to-spot icon, to reinforce critical thinking in practice.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book provides a wealth of critical thinking cases for nurses promoting the development of higher level thinking and reasoning skills... Each case study provided sufficient information to support the scenario and the questions posed. The perforated pages allow the case studies to be removed from the book to be worked on, making the book user friendly." Nurse Education in Practice, May 2009

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Tool, February 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Winningham & Preusser's Critical Thinking Cases in Nursing: Medical-Surgical, Pediatric, Maternity, and Psychiatric Case Studies, 4e (Paperback)
I have found success in nursing school depends on my being able to educate myself, and this book has aided my learning in many ways. The case studies have helped me learn how information relates to patient care, and how to put the whole picture together. In essence, they give me a chance to get the information out of the book and my notes and into my head. Even better, the questions pull information in ways that I hadn't considered and so allow me to learn more than I would have studying without it.

I was frustrated at first that there were no "answers" to the case studies, but realized quickly that this works to my advantage. Having to look up the information and think through the questions instead of simply skipping to the back of the book improves my retention. It is also helpful to work through the case studies with a study partner - which can give me a whole different perspective on the problems.

My only complaint would be that the case studies are not organized beyond body system. This means I need to read the initial story for every case study in a section to decide which ones apply to the problems we are studying in class. I do understand listing them by problem would take some of the learning out of the case studies - but it would save time in finding which ones to go over when.

I definitely recommend this resource to other nursing students, have gotten several of my classmates to purchase it and even suggested it be used as part of our curriculum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenge the brain!, February 19, 2010

I got this book to help me practice visualizing the whole picture in a case. I think as nursing students we get bogged down in trying to remember all the information that we need to remember that we forget an important part of doing well is putting it all together once we have all the information. This book is a good way to practice the whole picture thinking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless without answers, May 26, 2011
This review is from: Winningham & Preusser's Critical Thinking Cases in Nursing: Medical-Surgical, Pediatric, Maternity, and Psychiatric Case Studies, 4e (Paperback)
The case studies are very well done, but they are pretty useless if you don't know if you are answering the questions correctly. Even when you look up the info on your own, you can't always tell if you have the correct answers. Put the answers in (or post them online) and I'd give it four or five stars. As it is, it's basically useless.
