We bought two to display some of our odds and ends that had been put away. My wife did the selecting and these seemed to be the best choice.

As has been pointed out, when they came they were dusty so we vacuumed them; no problem. The wood looks good to me. It's some work to put them together and a few holes didn't line up perfectly but all were close enough that it wasn't any problem to tighten any of the screws. I got a lot of help from my wife holding parts on the first one but I did the second almost entirely by myself. Be sure to look at the middle shelves to pick out the better side for the top; you have a choice for those two.

A few suggestions: Start with the bottom shelf. Put the support on and pound in the dowels. Do not use plugs for these holes; they aren't provided. (I suggest having a hammer on hand for the dowels.) Then move to a work bench or table. You'll need to work at the edge to use the included Allen wrench most easily. I attached all the shelves onto one side, then onto the other. I'd start with the bottom shelf then perhaps do the top. It's helpful to have a small rod to put through the top holes and hang the top of the shelf in place by that while you screw in the bottom screw.

I like them; I think they are good pieces of furniture.

My house was built in the 20s, so there is very limited closet space and the places you can put shelves are awkwardly small. I thought this sort of shelf would be perfect in my bathroom if only a couple of inches too wide to let the door open all the way. When the time came to buy one, I was astounded at the price of them! Amazon has a few that are cheaper, but they catch you with $30 shipping costs. This particular shelf is eligible for Prime which I love to use. I'd searched and searched for one of a comparable price, but hadn't found anything else that didn't gut me on shipping or wasn't entirely too large. So, I broke down and bought this shelf last week.

The shelf got here in record time (way to go UPS and Amazon!), and I really excited to get it put together and start organizing my new home. I pulled the shelf out of the box and it was remarkably dirty. I mean, every piece of this shelving unit was covered in saw dust and silty dirt. I pull out all the screws, the directions, and start dusting off all the pieces. The color is dark espresso supposedly, but I'd err on the side of caution and say that this is more black than anything else. In espresso, you can still see the brown. This is black until direct natural light hits it and then you can see the reddish undertones. Fortunately, this works in my bathroom, but for those of you looking for more brown than black, go elsewhere.

Anyhow, so I start checking out all the pieces. It is fairly self-explanatory on how to put the whole thing together, but I notice that the edges are very rough/sharp. The wood is fairly cheap and dry, so I can see how it may not hold up well in humidity or be the best bet for a child's bedroom.

After debating a long time about this unit due to the 1 star reviews, I went ahead and ordered it because it seemed to be just the right size for our bedroom. Most of the ladder/leaning type shelves are very tall, and we wanted to set a 20-inch TV on it and not be craning our necks to watch it. This bookshelf was super easy and quick to assemble. The quality is reflective of the price but it does look nice. There was only one tiny nick on a shelf that we were able to face down so it doesn't show. The finish is quite dark but I disagree with those who say it looks black. You can definitely see that it is brown. The height works well and the lower shelves will look great with some baskets to store DVDs, etc. FYI, the top shelf is narrow but we were still able to place the TV on it because it is a lightweight LCD that is very thin. You could never put something heavy on these shelves, at least not on the upper two. Bottom line, I'm glad I ordered this.

Where in the world did these come from? They were actually impossible to put together, holes were way to small on a few holes and way to big on others nothing matched up. I actually had to hire someone to fix the holes!! I would have sent them back but shipping would have cost more than to try to have them fixed (by the way, they cracked upon fixing beause they were poorly poorly made! NO WAY! don't waste your time!

I was SO excited about this shelf and thought I'd ignore the low reviews...it couldn't be that bad, right?
Well, the finish was scratched right out of the box, the holes are WAY too small for the HUGE screws that come with it, and the holes do NOT line up correctly. It is such a headache to put together and is still not stable. I've got it together now and if I screw it into the wall, I won't be scared that it will tip over...but I shouldn't have to do that!
Don't make the mistake I did, do NOT buy this. The hassle is not worth the end result!
Totally unhappy.

Too bad! Nice product for the money if you don't mind doing the job for the company you paid to deliver. The manufacturer seems not to have quality control. One of the shelves had no holes whatsoever. Four drilled holes in each shelf are essential in the assembly of this product. It was either take the time and expense to return the product, drill the holes myself, or use the faulty shelf and take a chance on the shelf eventually falling. My time is too valuable to do the job for a company I've paid for their product. In business as in life, you have one chance to make a first impression. My advice to the buyer, be prepared for frustration - Winsome doesn't check components before shipping and leaves the quality control to the customer. Too bad for the customer!
