no botton to file drawer,

Well the cabinet is nice enough, but if you want to store anything except files in the large drawer, then you will need to cut plywood to make a bottom and sides - because this has neither.

Very handsome. Probably not the best for oft-accessed files.,

This filing cabinet is just right for my needs, but I think I would get annoyed with it quickly if I were using the file drawer on a daily basis. For some reason it wants to slide in slightly crooked if I'm not careful, as though it had fallen off the track on one side, though I can't figure out how that could happen.
That's the only complaint I have about it, though. It's heavy but that's what you get with wood, and I specifically wanted a filing cabinet that would look nice in the bedroom of my small apartment. I didn't have much trouble putting it together. The only thing is that I didn't realize what all of the rails were for until I was almost done, so I had to partially disassemble it to get the other pair in. The filing drawer can be used for either letter sized files (facing forward) or legal sized files (facing the side). So there are two pairs of rails, one pair running front to back for letter and another side to side for legal. The instructions were okay. Someone complained that they didn't say what order to do things in but that's not true. It has numbered steps. Within each step it doesn't say what order to do things in but it doesn't matter what order you do them in. If it did, they'd separate it out into multiple steps. Someone also complained that the holes don't line up. Well, they're just pilot holes. This isn't Ikea furniture where you're putting things together using pegs. This is real wood, and they give you real wood screws, and if you put the screw in crooked it will go in crooked. The pilot hole is a guide that makes it MUCH easier to line things up but it does not prevent a screw that was designed to bore through wood from boring through wood. It doesn't take a carpenter to put this together but it's not idiot proof either. Be mindful, and it should go just fine. A word to the wise: attach the drawer knobs last. They didn't include any extra screws, so if you lose one you'll have to find some sort of replacement. Any wood screw of about the right length and diameter will work just fine to attach the knobs, so save those for last in case you find yourself short on screws at the end of putting it together. The tolerance for what is an acceptable screw for the other locations might be tighter. Also, for anyone who doesn't do this kind of thing very often, remember to tighten bolts and screws in sets, not individually. That is to say, if you're putting in two bolts to attach part A to part B, don't put in one and tighten it all the way down before you put in the other one. Get them both in part way and go back and forth between them, tightening just a bit at a time, until they're both tight. This will help to keep everything lined up nicely because the stresses on the parts remains balanced throughout the process. It's also a good idea to go back after the whole thing is assembled and check the tightness of the bolts and screws because until the whole thing is assembled the stresses will always be a bit unbalanced.

Winsome Wood file review,

This is a decent product. Takes quite a while to put together. Directions not the best - gives overall of how to put together but not a list of what to do first. I had to take a few pieces apart and start over. It also takes a bit of time to get the screws adjusted so the drawers slide properly. If the drawers are too tight - loosen the screws in that area until it slides properly. There's no bottom to the file drawer and the sides are open but functions as it should.
I like it because it has the 3 pencil drawers (which is difficult to find on a file cabinet). I have it completely filled and haven't had any problems once it was set up.
