I bought two of these shelves and am very pleased with them. They are attractive and sturdy, and the folding action works smoothly.

The packaging shows care -- the shelves are individually wrapped to avoid any nicks during shipping and the small hardware is in its own box with a very clear inventory so that you can check that you have everything before you get started. There's a part replacement order form in case anything is left out of your shipment, but both of mine were complete. (These might seem like obvious precautions, but I've ordered lots of assemble-yourself furniture that wasn't nearly so well thought-out.)

Assembly is not too hard. The instructions suggest that you might want an extra pair of hands, but I found that if I leaned the side piece against the wall while I was installing cross-bars, I could put together the whole thing by myself with no tools or materials other than the ones included (and I am not an especially handy person). After the previous review, I was worried that the pieces might not be made precisely enough to fit together well, but I didn't have too much trouble there; following the directions and tightening the screws gradually I was able to get the whole thing to come together snugly.

I've loaded the finished shelves up with books (including some pretty heavy dictionaries and art books) and they're showing no bending or strain. I may buy more of these for other rooms.

The bookshelf arrived quickly, there were no missing pieces, and no additional tools were required. The wood pieces were in great shape. I am pregnant and put it together with ease due to the clear and concise instructions. The final product looks great in the baby's room. :-)

It's an ok shelf but a little rough and not all that precisely made. A lot of fit and form issues. Otherwise, it was the right size for what I needed as a display shelf.

My husband is struggling over the assembly of this bookcase as I write. The wood is split and scratched in places. An Allen screw head is stripped, the Allen wrench is weak and bending, a screw is sticking out making it difficult to insert the little wooden screw-cover. The wood is mismatched in places. BUT, (an hour later) now it's finished and it feels sturdy and looks attractive from across the room. So, overall, I'd say, "You get what you pay for." What can you expect for less than a hundred dollars. It's an "over-flow" bookcase in a back room and I don't regret buying it.

The shelf is nice. However, the "pre-drilled" holes were way to small for the screws the manufacturer supplied. If you try to use the hex wrench supplied without re-drilling the "pre-drilled" holes, both the hex wrench and the screw head will strip and you will have a problem since you can not at this point tighten down the parts. So if you buy this shelf make sure you have your drill out. Once you re-drill the holes it's a breeze.

It baffles me why these shelves did not come fully assembled, so -1 star for that. The instructions were clear and all the tools you need are included. It took me about 15-20 minutes to assemble the shelves.

The quality seems to be very good and I am using them (I ordered two of these) in my kitchen to store my frequently used pans, mixing bowls, knives etc. and I have placed some cutting boards on the top. They have made a huge positive impact in my kitchen and I don't think I can live without them!

This is real wood, not particleboard. Extra points for that. Plus it has nice details - the mission sides, smooth edges, and beveled top. We are not using its portability - it has added usable space to a corner of our kitchen. We put our toaster and Cuisinart on top and it's the perfect height to use them. The shelves are deep enough to store pots but we're using them for towels, plastic containers, etc. Our handyman put it together in a few minutes with no problems. The only small problem is that some of the screw covers (= little wood button caps) -- another nice detail -- didn't stay in their holes and had to be glued in. They'll probably pop out again so I'll need to keep an eye on them. Big deal. It's a very good value, well above the average put-it-together melamine stuff I'm used to getting. I'd order Winsome stuff again. Also, it came extremely fast, like a day or two after I ordered it. Kudos.

I normally do not write reviews - however, after assembling this book shelf I thought I would caution potential buyers of some of the problems I encountered. It should be very easy to assemble - but the holes predrilled were not large enough. They enclose a hex head wrench which is small and really can bruise your hand when trying to get the screws into the predrilled holes. I finally got out my drill and enlarged the holes to make it somewhat easier to assemble - even then you need to use caution as to not make them too big. It is a nice piece of furniture - but assembly is difficult only in that it is not drilled properly!

On the left side panel, 3 out of 8 holes for the back braces were missing. It took two people to assemble. The final product is decent. But for the price I paid, I expected higher quality in manufacturing.

I bought this shelf to use as a book shelf (duh) and the top as a bedroom vanity. (ah, tiny New York apartments...)
The shelf went together with not problems - - I'm a hundred pound girl and I assembled it by myself in under an hour. EASY.
Folds nicely and holds my books beautifully. The wide top is nice for storage, I have a mirror, makeup case and a jewelry box fitting nicely.
Overall, a great bargain, and I would happily purchase another shelf or Winsome Wood product when needed.
