5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect! Just what I needed!!
I almost did not buy this due to the reviews. I am a 38 year old woman and it took me 1/2 hour to put it together by myself. Yes, the screws that hold the cross bars were a bit difficult to get in. However once you get them in, this piece is solid! This is just what I needed in my dining room window to hold my nine pots of herbs! I chose this piece because it does not...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad hardware
Putting this shelf together was a tremendous hassle. You would think a folding shelf would come fairly assembled already. Instead, the folding construction makes it very difficult to assemble as directed. The included allen wrench stripped the wood screws very quickly. I had to buy a new set of similar screws and put the shelf together with a power drill. That was...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad hardware, March 17, 2009

Putting this shelf together was a tremendous hassle. You would think a folding shelf would come fairly assembled already. Instead, the folding construction makes it very difficult to assemble as directed. The included allen wrench stripped the wood screws very quickly. I had to buy a new set of similar screws and put the shelf together with a power drill. That was the only way to get the hardware tight enough to hold the shelf together safely and sturdily.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality control, December 19, 2009

I received two of the same side pieces - not two different(a single left and a single right) side pieces.

Very poor quality control. Six weeks later, I'm still waiting on the manufacturer to ship the correct piece.

2.0 out of 5 stars Requires Assembly, September 5, 2009

This seems as if it is a easily unfolding shelf unit, but it is
really a heavy, complex kit which requires assembly. Be
sure this is what you want, and that you are able to assemble it.
The description does not say that it requires assembly.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!, February 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Winsome Wood Stackable/Folding 3-Tier Shelf, Natural (Kitchen)
After two hours of stripped screws, mangled shelves, and smashed fingers, I ended up using 3 bungee cords to hold a simple 3 shelf bookcase together. It holds books now, but I could have accomplished the same thing with some cement blocks and 1x6 planks. It is junk, and I'm assuming most of the other Winsome Wood products are of equally cheap construction. Save your money!

I chose this piece because it does not have solid back in order for the light to pass through to my plants. It is absolutely perfect and compliments the rest on my modern, light oak furniture well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid and sturdy, July 26, 2010

I know that a lot of people complain about the hardware, but I have had no problems with this product. It arrived quickly and without damage. It went together quickly and easily. I have it loaded with books and it's fantastic. I am actually going to buy two more.

All of the Winsome Wood foldable/stackable bookshelves I have are great. Unless you want to pay for a shelf made of MDF that you'll need to replace within a couple of years (if that), you won't find a cheaper shelf to meet your needs. The solid wood, though not exactly generous in proportions, is certainly a big reason I bought the shelf in the first place and will buy again.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed with need for assembly, June 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Winsome Wood Stackable/Folding 3-Tier Shelf, Natural (Kitchen)
I'm so disappointed that I had to put these together myself. I really wanted these bookcases, I ordered (4) of them because they're stackable and they look great. I already had a couple of them from years back that I ordered from Stacks and Stacks and have been very happy with them. Years ago, when I first purchased, they were pre-assembled when I bought them directly from the store.

I tried for almost 45 minutes to put (1) bookcase together and gave up in frustration when I realized they would not be able to be stacked together the way I expected (this required hinges and extra brackets to be secured to the wall; not like the first set of bookcases I purchased which stacked together with pegs and did not need to be secured to the wall).

I'm returning all (4) pieces and am back to square one for my bookcase needs. Such a simple design, I don't know why they don't come pre-assembled.

The title says it all. The pieces don't fit. Some of the screws came pre-stripped. I threw it in the street.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Bookshelf, February 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The crossbars are easier to install if the screws are dry soaped and screwed all the way down to the installed position first, then back them out for the install itself. Otherwise the additional leverage required while in the install position makes the process unreasonably difficult. The positioning of shelves and crossbars is also too difficult if this is not done. Put the crossbars in solidly on one side and then in slightly on the other side. put in the shelves and tape the loose side in the final position with the pins and holes aligned, rotate the bookcase up on its installed side and screw the crossbars into place one by one, half turns one after the other and it's just not all that difficult. I got six of these as the price is reasonable and stacked them into 3 sets.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wobbly and dissapointing, October 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I was surprised I needed to assemble these shelves. The hardware was poor quality and I could not get the shelves stable, despite help and a long history of putting tougher self-assemble furniture. I would not recommend this product.
