Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Winston loves to sink his teeth into a good book. Ignoring the No Wolves Allowed sign posted on the library door, he rushes inside for a quick nibble. Rosie, a little girl wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, helps him understand that Words taste even better when you eat them with your eyes and teaches him to read. With his love of language, Winston quickly develops a taste for sweet and juicy words like sunset and swoosh and rambunctious. When he runs out of books to read, he borrows a frilly dress and returns to the library disguised as Granny Winston. He registers for a library card and enthusiastically leads a storyhour session. Beck's charming crosshatched illustrations show a fairy-tale cast of characters. The clever design includes a wolf-bite-sized cutout cover. This is a delicious treat of a tale for young book lovers.–Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Giggle-licious! March 21, 2007
Format:Hardcover
Marni McGee's rollicking tale of an insatiable word-gobbling wolf is a delight from start to finish. Pair it with one or two or thirty story-hungry kids and you have a recipe for lots of laughs and the need to read. Ms. McGee's love of language is infectious, and Ian Beck's brilliant art adds to the fun in a big way! A true gem and must have for story hours everywhere.

Winston LOVES books, he loves to eat their tasty words! One afternoon he went to his local library and found he wasn't allowed in since too many of their books had been chewed on by him. Winston got around the librarian and a chase insued where he met Rosie who helped him escape. Rosie has a red hoodie jacket and small woven basket.. sound a little familiar? Any way after they where a safe distance away from the library Rosie asked Winston why he chewed books? His reply... they're delicious! Rosie replied with the best sentence in this book " You do not have to chew on a book to taste the wonderful words inside. Words taste even better when you eat them with your eyes!" Turns out Winston didn't know how to read so Rosie taught him with her books. After while Winston and read and re-read all of Rosie's books at home andwanted more stories. How could he get into the library? Rosie and Winston where passing by Grandma whiles he was putting out the clothes to dry when they got an idea of putting on Grandma's clothes and visiting the library. Well when they got to the library and librarian let " Grandma " Winston in.... she looke familiar but where had she seen the face. Rosie asked for a library card for Grandma and volunteered her to read at story time!

Cute book with a classic tale we are all familiar with but with a twist. It's cute to see Rosie updated to a red hoodie, and you'll also see the 3 pigs in the pages as well as Grandma Winston reading " Winston the Book Wolf" at story time!

Winston the Book Wolf is full of lively lessons for the elementary school library. I read this book to our first and second graders to share both our LOVE of words and the way we take care of books (not letting dogs or babies or wolves or anything damage our books). Many books on this topic are preachy and a bit on the dull side. This wolf is dangerous enough to keep things interesting! The story provides plenty of opportunities to stop and predict what might happen next, to connect with our own experiences in the library, and to discover other fairly tales slyly mixed into the colorful illustrations. Winston the Book Wolf is a welcome guest in our library!
