as of this writing, there seem to be two main GPS dataloggers that have (1) essentially no user interface aside from status LEDs and a couple of buttons (i.e., the device can just be turned on and will automatically collect position data until turned off) and (2) a "driverless" mode that does not require installation of a USB/serial driver and an OS-dependent data-downloading application (i.e., the device just looks like a USB storage device when connected to any host computer with any operating system). these are the Amod AGL-3080 and the Wintec WBT-202 (the older Wintec units, like the WBT-201, seem to have been discontinued).

the Amod uses the common SiRF-III GPS chipset, has a battery life of around 10-15 hours using 3 AAAs, and saves its data in the standard NMEA-0183 format. as such it's really easy to work with in the field, though the battery life is not always enough for a "working day." my experience is that its TTFF in an urban environment is ok but not great - in a wide open lot it still takes about 2 minutes to get a cold fix, and standing next to a 3-story office building it can often go 10 minutes or longer without a fix.

the Wintec uses the common uBlox-5 GPS chipset, has a battery life of around 20-25 hours using an internal (but replaceable) Li-ion battery, and saves its data in Wintec's proprietary TES format. because of the latter choice, either Wintec's Windows WBT_Tool or an open source application (such as recent releases of gpsbabel) are needed to convert the data to other GPS formats.

I researched the various data loggers out there, and this one was my pick because it is detected as a flash drive. No special software required and as a mac owner, that was a key selling point.

I use this for capturing my track during long hikes and mountain climbs. I have just recently geo-tagged my photos and I was surprised how easy the process was.

1- turn on (turn the bluetooth off)
2- hike & capture your track
3- mount as a flash drive and most web software such as gpsvisualizer or everytrail will convert the .tes files to what ever your need. I use a geo-tagging plugin for Lightroom that requires GPX, and the free program GPSbabel will convert the .tes files to gpx xml files.

This little device is great if you don't need any extra software, want long battery life (demonstrated 3 days of hiking using the default settings), and a simple way to capture GPS tracks.

I have been using it in the last year to geotag my photos. My workflow is:

1. Plug the WBT-202 in Mac using USB cable
2. Convert the proprietary format to GPX using HoudahGPS
3. Import the GPX file in Lightroom
4. Geotag the photos

The bad points of the product are:

1. Bad finish, the plastic layer over the buttons is almost gone
2. Terrible interface
3. I don't know how to use the bluetooth interface

This unit does its job efficiently and appears to be accurate. The lack of a decent lanyard connection point is an irritation but I am storing it successfully in the mesh pocket of my camera bag. A warning for Mac users is that the embedded software and functionality is unavailable. It does, however, successfully download tracks to HoudahGeo which then allows for automatic geo-tagging of iPhoto images. As an aside, that geo-tagging is lost if you "share" the photo from within iPhoto but is kept if you export an image and then e-mail it.

Wintec WBT-202 Blue-tooth Data Logger

Very useful and accurate device. Worked exactly as described. At first I thought I might need a colledge degree to configure the recorder to the settings pertinent to my particular use, not the case. Very simple very accurate. GPS files can be easily converted and imported to most any mapping software.
