Damaris Chance’s unhappy past has turned her off the idea of marriage forever. But her guardian, Lady Beatrice Davenham, convinces her to make her coming out anyway—and have a season of carefree, uncomplicated fun.

When Damaris finds herself trapped in a compromising situation with the handsome rake Freddy Monkton-Coombes, she has no choice but to agree to wed him—as long as it’s in name only. Her new husband seems to accept her terms, but Freddy has a plan of his own: to seduce his reluctant winter bride.

Will Damaris’s secrets destroy her chance at true happiness? Or can Freddy help her cast off the shackles of the past, and yield to delicious temptation?

5.0 out of 5 stars Who wants some experimental Chinese swimming pigs? April 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The Winter Bride is a laughter-filled journey into the world of experimental Chinese swimming pigs, enchanting the hearts of readers and making them yearn to read the story over and over again. Intrigued? I hope so.

Confirmed bachelor Freddy Monkton-Coombes has a deep aversion to marriage, responsibilities, and muffins - the eligible misses of marriageable age who seek to entrap him in marriage. His best friend, Max, had married one of the Chance Sisters in The Autumn Bride (A Chance Sisters Romance), and asked Freddy to look after them along with his elderly Aunt Beatrice while he's on his honeymoon. Appalled, Freddy reluctantly agrees, and that's where his troubles began. He has no problem dealing with the charming Jane and Daisy Chance, but Damaris Chance is a different matter.

Damaris Tait became Damaris Chance in a chain of events detailed in The Autumn Bride. She had grown up in China with her missionary father, and escaped to England upon the death of her father and the burning of their mission. What she endured during her travels is her deepest secret, and also the one which convinced her to never marry, despite her deep yearning for security and a husband to care for her. When Freddy is driven to near insanity by the ploys of his mother to marry, he concocts a crazy scheme of a fake betrothal with the only girl who doesn't want to marry - Damaris. Yet, as their fake betrothal continues, why does Freddy suddenly want to make it real? And more importantly, can he convince Damaris to tell him the shadows of her past?

This is an amazing piece of work that animates not only Freddy and Damaris, but every secondary character, making them lovable and realistic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winter is Wonderful! April 1, 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
THE WINTER BRIDE is Anne Gracie's second installment in her Chance Sisters series. The "sisters" (only two of the four are actually related) bonded through adversity and each will get the Happily Ever After treatment. Both the hero and heroine of this book were featured in the first book of the series. He was the best friend who flirted with everything in a skirt and was scared of "muffins" (marriageable debutantes). She was one of the two sisters rescued from a brothel by Abby, the heroine of the AUTUMN BRIDE. You don't need to read the first book but it adds back story to this entry.

Gracie is a gifted writer of the genre and the narrative holds together well. Unlike some writers who build a secondary character to legendary proportions over several novels and then provide a less than stellar entry for the character's own star turn, Gracie knows to move them up to the big leagues before they wear out their welcome or become too larger than life not to let the reader down.

Freddy and Damaris set off sparks from the beginning but are too scarred by their pasts to move toward their HEA until they join forces to thwart others who are determined each character must marry. A fake betrothal sets the stage for confronting those responsible for scarring them. Gracie's use of deft humor turns Damaris sad beginning into a wonderful winter fairytale.

Gracie's books usually include sex scenes but are never erotic literature. The few sex scenes occur near the end of the novel. The narrative carries the reader and not the number of sex acts. I loved that Gracie had her couple joke about whips (and their laughable use) at the end as an acknowledgment of those suddenly popular BDSM novels that claim to be romances but aren't.

Until this moment, if anyone asked what was my favorite Anne Gracie book I would have said The Perfect Rake - without a doubt. And now - I would be hard pressed to choose between The Perfect Rake and The Winter Bride!

I absolutely LOVED this book - Freddy is as close to perfect as you can imagine. He is kind, funny, loyal and well just stinking perfect!

Damaris is wonderful too - my heart just broke for this girl. The fact that she was not a nasty man hating shrew is amazing. After everything she had been through - I think I could have even liked her if she was. But she wasn't - she was the perfect match for Freddy. She is warm, loving and fiercely protective of those she loves. I love how she stood up to Freddy's parents - she was incredible!

I can't wait for the next book - will it be Daisy or Jane? Who will Flynn end up with? Ms. Gracie please write faster!!!

If you want a book that has humor without being silly and a book with emotional depth without being dark and heavy - READ THIS BOOK. You will not be disappointed !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Friends become something more April 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Winter Bride is a deep story about forgiveness and masks and soul searching. The leads are world weary and are so wounded that they are searching not for love but for solitude and peace.

Damaris has vowed never to marry and for a young woman in regency England, this attitude is a complete anomaly. Instead she longs for independence and a small cottage in the country where she can paint and live a life of simplicity.

Freddy never wants to marry either. Although he has lived as a rake, he is much more than he appears. He is a successful businessman and he is honorable, so he accepts with reluctance his best friend's charge of watching after his sister-in-laws, one of whom is Damaris.

Freddy is intrigued by Damaris who is serene, cool and collected. When his mother tries to force an unwanted house party on him with the sole intention of finding Freddy a bride he believes he has the perfect solution to his dilemma;. he and Damaris will pretend to be betrothed. In exchange for her cooperation she will receive her cottage. What seems like a perfect answer becomes more of a problem for both parties.

What makes this story unique are the characters who hide their hurt from even their most loved ones. Freddy adopts a devil-may-care attitude but Damaris sees beyond this façade and hiding inside her pretend fiancé is a heartbreakingly wounded boy, stuck in the past, unable to move forward. Damaris becomes a lioness, protecting, defending and ultimately saving her dear friend from a bleak future. Unlike most tortured heroes, Freddy is not brooding and not an angry bear, snarling and snapping at the one trying to help him.
