Book Description

Sexy, kilt-wearing Tristan has captured Amber’s attention on many occasions. But as members of the Kingsword coven, which has strict rules about intimate relationships inside the circle, dating him is out of the question.

When the coven heads to a secluded woodland cabin to celebrate the Winter Solstice, Amber finds herself closer than ever to Tristan. As the Longest Night approaches and their group’s ritual workings intensify, the pair realizes that they can hide from their feelings no longer.

Just as King Arthur held vigil before being knighted, Tristan and Amber face their shadows—and the realization that one or both of them might have to leave the coven.

Or can they be together without breaking their honor?

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Transition from the Darkness to Light August 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Disclaimer: While I am an editor for one of the publishing houses with which Shauna Aura Knight contracts, this particular book was not published through us, nor have I personally worked with her on any of her projects. In addition, I did receive a complimentary copy of this book directly from the author. This is my honest opinion of this book.

There was something very magical about this story. Set in time leading up to and on the Winter Solstice, one can witness the main characters, Amber and Tristan, move from inner darkness to the light.

One of the aspects of this book that sat most profoundly with me, though, were the scenes in which the coven engages in ritual. One can almost sit and transition into other states of being while reading the passages. In truth, the words sat quite heavily with me. I found myself delving within, asking myself some of the questions posed to the coven during the ritual.

Those passages were my favorite parts of the book. It is more than obvious to me that the author is accustomed to and comfortable in the leadership position within a circle.

While, overall, I did like the book, there were - quite honestly - things about it that left me feeling less than enthusiastic about it.

The discussion the coven had following their first supper of the holiday together did wear on me a bit. As I read further along, though, I realized that it did play an integral role in plot.

In addition, while I do enjoy reading a good sex scene and (of course) expect it in erotica, I felt as though - given the length of A Winter Knight's Vigil - there were more than its fair share.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read June 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
DISCLAIMER: I got a free review copy, but the thoughts here are mine and mine alone.

I chose to read/review this one because it looked like an interesting read and I was not disappointed. The book follows the story of a coven who is meeting to keep a vigil and take their vows. During the weekend, two of these people suddenly find themselves attracted to each other, but not sure what to do about it, as the coven forbids such relationships.

What I enjoyed most about this book was getting a glimpse into the inner workings of a coven and their rituals. There is a lot many people don't know about Pagan religions, so it's cool to learn a little and see it represented in fiction. The main characters were fun, they interacted well with each other, and I liked seeing how the whole story turned out.

Since this is a short one, I don't feel I can say too much more without giving a lot away. I will say, however, that I am happy to see that some things didn't turn out completely perfectly. Things change, and the book reflected that. I recommend this one for adult-only audiences who enjoy a short and sweet read, as well as adults who might want a peek at the Pagan lifestyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, especially on Dec 21 /|\ December 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I read A Winter Knights Vigil today, and the timing couldn't have been better. I've been interested in reading Shauna Aura Knight's work for a while now and I was not disappointed. This book was an excellent read for a variety of reasons. Anyone who knows Shauna personally will be able to hear her particular style in story telling and ritual format. Those who have an interest in modern celtic inspired tales will also find a number of happy moments in this story. There are the added bonus of a great love story and some hot action. It is easy to connect to the characters and honestly I kinda wish there was more to the story so I could read on

"A Winter Knight's Vigil" is a very in-the-now story with characters who are believable and in real situations. It's refreshing to see an erotic, romantic story that is incredibly Pagan. But I encourage non-Pagans to read it too: while the story is wrapped around pagan activities, the story still dives into basic, universal emotions and fears, especially when dealing with relationships that are "forbidden" (in this case, by group policy). Many readers who have been part of a coven, grove, or similar groups can likely identify with the people and activities at the gathering, the types of conversations, and the worries about the social relationships.

Admittedly, I don't really dig the Arthurian elements but I find an accessibility to the story. How many of us can identify with what Amber has gone through (job loss, housing concerns, being young and trying to get by)? Tristan is also going through his own growth, wanting to move on in his life to something more serious, which readers may recognize in themselves and/or people that they know.

The story speaks well to the need to fulfill emotional and intimate needs, as well as the need to gather with people who make us feel like we belong and the pain of potentially losing that --- especially when the chance for love is in direct competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Winter Knight's Vigal December 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Amber had a rough year. She lost her job and had to move into a smaller apartment. The only bright side is that her coven has stood by her side through everything. They even chipped in so she can join them for a Yule retreat. All she has to do is offer up her cooking skills. The night before the ritual, they all get a little drunk and reveal some secrets, but Amber holds back the biggest secret of them all. She has feelings for one of her coven brothers, but that is against the rules. She wants to follow her heart and tell the sexy Tristan how she feels, but she doesn't want to lose the coven that provides the only stability in her life. Before the sun rises after the longest night of the year, both Amber and Tristan will have to make a choice.

A Winter Knight's Vigil is a fabulous story with a few steamy scenes, but it also offers a look into some interesting pagan beliefs. The characters in the book follow an Arthurian path, and I found the detailed rituals that are described very interesting. This novella is the perfect combination of romance and spiritualism and definitely s great read on a cold winter's night.
