Book Description

June 2004 Best of Betty Neels
A marriage of convenience.

Araminta first met Professor Jason Lister when she was hired to look after his niece and nephew. Knowing that her plain but honest looks weren't about to catch her a husband, she believed she'd never marry. And that's why she was intrigued by the professor's proposal. Their marriage, he argued, would be infinitely practical -- and Araminta was nothing if not practical. Then again, what's practical about love?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bachelor's Wedding - Relaxing Read- 5 + stars, May 27, 2008

Book Description: Araminta first met Professor Jason Lister when she was hired to look after his niece and nephew. Knowing that her plain but honest looks weren't about to catch her a husband, she believed she'd never marry. And that's why she was intrigued by the professor's proposal. Their marriage, he argued, would be infinitely practical -- and Araminta was nothing if not practical. Then again, what's practical about love?

This story is a pleasant Cinderella-like marriage-of-convenience.

Araminta Smith was plain, kind, and hard-working. She continually hid the hurt and frustration caused by her only living parent, her father. He regarded her as the housekeeper and part-time wage earner; while her younger, much prettier sister, Alice, was pampered, spoiled, selfish, demanding, and lazy courtesy of their unfair, Alice-doting father.

Professor Jason Lister was content with his life as a Consultant, Surgeon, and bachelor, enjoying quiet reading during his hard earned spare time. Jason hired Araminta to care for his niece and nephew when his sister was called away to another country to attend to her ill husband. Araminta handles the charges left to her care with her own style of understanding grace while the reader, at times, may barely hold on to what patience is left. During it all, Jason is drawn to Araminta's calm, kindness, and even her looks. He realizes what is missing in his life and justifies his desire to marry her with logical reasons that are mutually beneficial and will allow both of them to improve their quality of life.

Jason has strong protective feelings for Araminta and she eventually demonstrates that she is just as determined to protect Jason. Their developing relationship and the realization that their their marriage is everything they could ever want it to be and more is a pleasant, relaxing story any loyal Betty Neels fan will love.

A practical marriage?... Araminta Smith had first met Professor Jason Lister when she was hired to look after his niece and nephew. Knowing that her plain but honest looks weren't about to catch her a husband, she was intrigued by the distinguished surgeon's interest in her. Since he was also a confirmed bachelor, the professor's proposal came as an even greater surprise. A marriage between them, as he pointed out to her, would be infinitely practical - and Araminta was nothing if not practical. But then....what about love?....
