5.0 out of 5 stars Very thick and warm.
Got these socks for my son to wear down with our horses on cold days and nights. They really help keep his feet warm when mine are freezing. I would get some for myself, but they're to thick to fit with my boots.

So, we had a blizzard, and my heater died the day it hit and was out for 10 days. I bought a few oil-filled electric radiators and dressed in multiple layers and was OK, except for my feet. I ordered these, and bought a couple of pairs of Dickies insuled work socks from Wal-Mart, and some more substantial Carhartt wool work socks from a local Western wear store to tide me over till they got here.

The Dickies were OK, but not great. The Carhartts were better, but not perfect. When I put the Dickies on first, then the Carhartts, though, it was really awesome.

When these got here, they were so much thicker than the other socks, I thought they'd be a lot warmer, but that wasn't the case. I guess the weave isn't as tight. I tried wearing the Dickies under them, but they were so thick that with the Dickies underneath, I couldn't fit my feet in my shoes.

Again, it's not really fair to write a critical review when I used them for a purpose other than that for which they were intended. If you're planning on layering them, though, I'd recommend buying your boots a size larger than normal.

Just received my J.B. Fields 40 degree socks. Am very pleased with them, they, I believe, are well worth the money paid.

I put them on immediately and am very well pleased with the warmth they give, as I'm using them, not for outdoor wear but for

home "toasty toes" use. And are my toes ever toasty!!!

I would recommend them to anyone who likes wearing socks around the house after a day on their feet.----Dan

5.0 out of 5 stars Very warm but big, November 20, 2011

Socks simply cannot be too warm for me during the winter. These are the warmest I have found (fleece ones are just a joke). They are, of course, quite thick in order to achieve the warmth. The sizing noted for women's 5 - 9 is much too big for a size 7 1/2 foot. I will try to shrink them next time with hot water; however, the elastic around the calf is already quite tight. But warm they are. Appear to be sturdy and am hoping they will last well, but have only worn them for a couple of days so far.

Though I now live in Los Angeles, I lived for many years in Minnesota so I know how important it can be to keep your feet warm. For several years now I have had a problem with cold feet due to a condition known as peripheral neuropathy. I have purchased many different types of socks to help my feet keep warm. These are the best I have found. Though not as soft as merino wool these are definitely warmer and more durable. They are well made and will last a long time. I would and will purchase them again and recommend them to my friends.

(REAL NAME)
As a West Cost transplant to the East Coast, warm socks in the winter are a must. Smart Wool is great, but these are just as good and half the price. They are a little more flopply and sloppy then the Smart Wool, but I don't mind the more casual fit. I really appreciate the availability in the larger sizes (in my case Men's 13) that are often in limited supply in the "name brands." The last few days I have been wearing them skiing and the temps have been in the low teens. My toes have been plenty warm, something I could not say for my fingers!

The sox are the greatest for keeping your feet warm. The sox come from Canada so the delivery date can't be relied on (may take an extra week or two due to Canadian mail problems) but be patient because you'll love them!

I ordered these socks so that I can ride my bicycle in Alaska during the winter. The minute I tried them on I fell in love, and now I wear them around the house as well as when I'm going outside. They are not scratchy at all - very comfortable, and keep my feet very warm.

Waiting for the cold weather so I can try these socks out. They are real heavy!!! Definately a boot is needed (with lots of room).
