A winner for Diana!!,
By
This review is from: Winter Soldier (Soldiers Of Fortune) (Harlequin Desire) (Paperback)
The back of the book reads, "Most everyone in Jacobsville, Texas, steered clear of taciturn Cy Parks. However, spirited Lisa Monroe wasn't exactly quaking in her boots, and electrified the formidable loner with her sweetly tantalizing kisses. Their fiery passion escalated when the winter soldier returned to the line of duty-and claimed the lovely Lisa as his bride, to shield her from a revenge-seeking desperado. Clearly, Cy was ghetting mighty possessive of this enchanting woman who needed the type of safeguarding only he could provide. But who would protect the beguiling bride from him...?"
My personal review, as an avid Diana Palmer reader, is that this is one of her more exciting, action-packed books. As it is one of her Soldiers of Fortune series, that is expected, but in addition, it was captivating with many sexual inferences. I would recommend this book to any person, whether or not they have had the pleasure of reading Diana's books.

Same characters, different names,

This review is from: Winter Soldier (Soldiers Of Fortune) (Harlequin Desire) (Paperback)
I love Diana Palmer books dearly. She writes basic romance novels. You know what you are getting when you buy one.But I am starting to think that she is using the same file on her pc over and over, just changing the names and places around to make it a little different. The basic story line is young girl meets older man. Older man is attracted to younger girl, is angry about it and is verbally abusive to her to fight the attraction, but at the same time protective. A marriage of convienence ensues. Passion overcomes and pregnancy results after only one encounter. Final conflict then happily ever after. That would be alright if there was some originality included. I felt as if I had read the book before. I also felt a little lost. There seemed to be sentences that go no where. Like the start of a new direction that is just left hanging, or could it have been a line left from the last novel forgotten and not deleted? Not her best effort.

I have read so far all of D. PALMERS books,I can say this was an excellent book. The hereo character was what you will expect from a male hero. Cy Parks was dangers but gentle, understanding, and loving. so if you do not own this book, you will be missing out on a great thing.

Long Tall Texans meet Soldiers of Fortune!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Winter Soldier (Soldiers Of Fortune) (Harlequin Desire) (Paperback)
I've always loved Ms. Palmer's series "Long, Tall Texans" and "Soldiers of Fortune," so I loved this book where she's combined the two. Cy Parks, a minor character from 2 previous "Long Tall Texan" novels, turns out to be more than he seems - enter "Soldiers of Fortune." This story crosses over, showing and referring to many of the characters from both series. We're back in Jacobsville, but this time Ms. Palmer's added a drug lord to the problems of ranching, and the small town of Jacobsville has apparently become a retirement home for former mercenaries. The overall story was great, even if the love story was a bit rushed. The only 2 problems I really had was the pregnancy issue (read the book) and the ending. The story was going along fine when all of the sudden it felt like Ms. Palmer decided to start telling another story before she ended this one. We move quickly from the main characters, Cy & Lisa, to a minor character, Micah Steele, without that warm fuzzy ending that most romance novels have. It was okay, but far too abrupt. I've seen characters from one story crossover or be carried over to another story, but this one leaped! It should have had a "To Be Continued..." at the end of it. Unfortunately, the next book doesn't come out until September 2001, so we're left hanging...

The Winter Soldier,
By Maline Miller (Mount Vernon, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Winter Soldier (Soldiers Of Fortune) (Harlequin Desire) (Paperback)
This is a typical Diana Palmer read,Lisa the couragous and struggling widow and Cy an ex soldier for hire. Lisa need protection and help with the death of her husband by a ruthless drug lord and Cy is seeking revenge on the drug lord she needs protection from. Lisa is sweet and naive and Cy has seen to much of a bad world. The chemistry beteewn Cy and lisa is great, these too are well matched. As with all Diana Palmer heroine Lisa is a little too naive, she is the last to realized she is not pregnant by her dead husband, even though she has none of the symptoms of being pregnant. I could not understand why she was not seing a doctor after she was diagnosed incorrectly? Most pregnant women have regular schedule with their doctors. While I had some issue with the way Lisa pregnancy was written, Diana Palmer never disapoint, she manage to give us a good romance with mystery and adventure.

I love Diana Palmer. She writes a great book, and I love her story lines. This one is a bit different than her usual, the heroine is recently widowed and her neighbor, Cy parks, ex-mercenary turns into her protector from the evil Lopez, drug lord. This book is one of many in the Jacobsville series. It's great though. The heroine is not timid at all, she gives as good as she gets.

Not a good match,
By A Customer
This review is from: Winter Soldier (Soldiers Of Fortune) (Harlequin Desire) (Paperback)
While I usually enjoy Diana Palmer's books, I didn't this one. I had high expectations b/c I have enjoyed her Soldiers of Fortune series so far. The hero was wonderful. It was the heroine I had problems with. She was too naive and immature to fit right with Cy. It was not a good match. Also, the ending was too abrupt. You did not get a good sense of the chatacter's feelings throughout the book. The pregnancy issue was a little too unrealistic. All women would realize whether they are pregnant or not. If there was a question, they would visit a doctor. However, it was great seeing the other characters in the book (especially Micah Steele) and the action was great.

disappointing yet again,
This review is from: Winter Soldier (Soldiers Of Fortune) (Harlequin Desire) (Paperback)
ok - the basic story line is lisa was recently married and widowed, and now is pregnat. cy decides to take care of her. subsequently they get together, sort of, and the bad man who killed her husband decides to come after her.
my first issue with this book is that it feels like it was written in the 80's. lisa can't work the ranch she inherited from her father, she can't control the men that work from her, basically, she is a failure as a ranch owner. the problem i have with this is that she grew up on the ranch - you are bound to pick up something during that time, regardless of whether or not your father wanted you running the place. in addition, lisa is the sweet naive innocent woman, she is practically a pregnant vigin for goodness sakes. then there is cy - he is a hard man with way too many hangups. first it is that she is just widowed (which is a legit hangup) then it is that she is pregnant by another man, then it is that she is too young. another issue i have is the inconsistencies in the story. for example, cy didn't have a problem with his first wife having a child from a different man, and she cheated on him! but, now that it is this woman he 'loves' he all the sudden is so mad that she is pregnant by her first husband. that sounds odd to me. especially since he claims he loves children so much. then there is lisa - for goodness sakes, you live on a ranch, grew up on one, yet you can't shoot a gun? so maybe i will buy that, but to be as skitish as she was around them, i find that very hard to buy. then the baby - ok, this is a spoiler, so if you don't want to know, skip this part - she is supposedly two weeks pregnant when she and cy meet. and she has alreayd found out that she is pregnant. that just seems odd to me - first how many women go to the doctor that quickly? but i could buy that. then the mixed up blood samples, come on, i am sure it happens, but it is a just a bit too coincidental in this story. and then she is doing things that are dangerous to the pregnancy she claims to want - such as pulling cows and such. that just doens't mesh with the character that palmer painted. i would believe she was dumb enough not to know, but her doctor had to have told her to be careful of certain things. then there are the other characters - we get a glimpse at a future book dealing with micah and his step sister. and that kind of turned my stomach. i know there is no blood relation, but to mess around with your step sister when you grew up with her just sounds wrong to me - too much like incest. and from the looks of things, it looks like that story will be as bad as this one - huge misunderstandings between the naive twit of a heroine and the overbearing bull headed hero. i hope you pick a different book, but whichever book you do pick i hope you enjoy it. i think i may have to give up on palmer, which is a shame, b/c she has such potential if she could just come out of the 80's and write a plot that wasn't the same as every other book she is written... |
